  • The spare tire, tire? Where to buy it?

    I've searched and couldn't find it or ever recall it being asked before but... who would sell the actual tire for a space saver spare? Are they available? What would it cost?

  • #2
    Part of the reason I asked is I was flipping through one of my catalogs and they had the rim for 94 & up Cobra spare. But it stated it was the rim only and the tire needed to be purchased separately and mounted by customer. I had never seen this before so I was curious. Any tire store guys out there?

      When I need a spare for one of the junk SVO's I'm always buying I usually get one out of a Mark VII in a junkyard. They work just fine on an SVO. Some of the early Continentals even have one with a lightweight aluminum rim!

        its unbelievable how much a spare tire "rubber" cost. if you need just the tire hit the junkyards and look for T 135 70 16

        btw i have a tire for the Cobra compact spare.

        tire = tire
        rim = steel/alu
        wheel = tire & rim

          Thanks again folks. I guess I'll be heading up to Dalton at some point in the near future to scrounge around. Has has around 300 or so Mustangs to pick through...

            I will have to disagree with that. I hate when the word rim is used to describe wheels from cars (except wire wheels). The rim is part of the wheel assembly. It is the outer part attached to the hub, where the tire mounts to.

            Tire=Rubber
            wheel=steel/alum.
            wheel and tire = wheel and tire

              In the proper Queens English, there's the hub, the spokes, the rim, and the road tyre. And, generally, there's some sort of Road Wheel Fixing Nut(s) to hold the assemby onto the axle stub.
              And if it's the mini-spare we're talking about, it is kept in the boot.

                I need to check it out but, if my spare doesn’t fit my baer 13’s in the front I’d be will to part with it for a reasonable price. Though, the money is not as important to me as than is trade.

                  Yes it is in the boot, the engine is under the bonnet. The car runs on petrol. Just be careful of the lorry.

                    spares

                    I realize this is an old thread, but I was just at the junkyard looking for a couple of spares for my two projects here. I pulled a spare from a TC which had a 4-lug wheel, but the tire size was: 125/70/16. Also, I pulled a spare out of a Lincoln Town Car which was sized at: 125/80/16. The larger Lincoln spare actually matched the tire height more closely than the TC size, but I don't know yet it it will fit in the well.

                      It should fit in the well no problem.

                      The mini spare used on the Mark VII Lincoln is a perfect replacement for the often missing SVO mini spare.

                      Some of the early 82-88 RWD Continentals had 5 lug mini spares mounted on aluminum rims. Those are very nice indeed to put on your SVO!

                              Actually, I was looking for the correct tire size for the spare. I was just being lazy as I have a concours-correct car sitting in my garage.

                              I do also have 3 of those aluminum Lincoln spare wheels. I was going to use a pair of them for skinnies up front on the White Trash project. One of them is already in the hatch with the TC tire on it. That one has some curb rash on it.
