I don’t know how common this kind of crack is on an E6 manifold but I thought I’d pass the info along so others can check this area on the back of the manifold before buying.
I bought it from a guy in CA and paid shipping only to have more scrap metal...
>>Was that manifold coated? I see alot of spalling around the area of the crack.
I don't think it was coated..the front looks 'normal'. It’s really a weird pattern to the cast, along with a top layer missing in the area on the back of the manifold. Could it be due to extreme heat?
I didn't clean it up too much but there is a crack on both ends of the hole. (See even more close-up picture!)
I like the 'easy repair' comments.. got any details??
Originally posted by Eyelawdoc Rod, that looks like a porosity in the casting.
Too bad you're not here in SoCal. I know a guy who could fix that for you and probably not charge you more tan a six pack or two.
My luck....it just arrived in PA from CA!!! It will soon have more miles in a UPS truck then on my car! I'm concerned about the 'spalling' in the area of the crack. Could it indicate a future weakness in the area?
The pic of the first manifold with the lighter coloration around the hole indicate to me that a welder has previously repaired the hole. The pic of the second manifold show a crack in the usual place where they develop.
I would put a small v cut where the crack is and mig weld it. One quick pass then smooth it up. I have fixed a few heads like this and they are still running. One of them is on the 84 svo now. The exhaust side at that.
Nickel rod is too hard and won't move with the heat.
