Autocross Tire

I just bought an 86 SVO. Starting in March/April, I plan on running it at open track events (Portland Raceway, Pacific Raceway, and maybe some other tracks). Hopefully, I can attend 3 or 4 open track events in 2006.

Over the past couple years, I have ran my 03 Mach 1 numerous times. I've been running Nitto 555 tires and liked them a lot. On the SVO, I'm thinking I want a good DOT autocross tire. Can anyone give me their opinion on one? And maybe how it stacks up against the Nitto (yeah, I know the Nitto is not a DOT race tire, other than a radial, it's my only point of reference)?

Kumho victoracers, and toyo proxes RA1's.


I have victoracers now, and plan to replace them with the RA1's because of they are said to have a much longer life.

hmmm. I've allways run victoracers, but they were hand-me-downs from a cobra driver who got a set of tires every year, so I dont have a good comparison for "tire life". he also used to get them shaved for better grip, which reduces life even more.

the person I am comparing the RA1 life with had a set of them, ran a season of autox on them 3 open track days, and uses them for transport. victoracers do age well though.

Look into Yokohama A032R's. I can get about 10000 miles out of a set, including several track days at Pacific Raceways during the Ride and Drive. It's not the ultimate autocross tire (seems like the Kumho V710 is the one to have), but you can drive to the track, do the track event and drive home on the A032R's.

I run the RA1's, and i like them a lot the wear very well, and should last a while.

I am using Kumho Ecsta V710. They are quite sticky.

Khumo 712 are also sticky, but I'm comparing them to cheap Pep boys tires... I was so used to sliding around cones, I was taking out cones on the insides of the corners because the car would actually turn instead od sliding past the cone and then turning. I can't wait to get out to some events this year and re-learn how to drive it.

Shaving them, which is highly recomended by the manufaturer,actually gives them more "life" and promotes even wear as opposed to not shaving them. Heat cycling is also benifical.

thanks for the info- I believe tire rack will heat cycle your tires for you, I can't remember
