  • Steering Rack?

When I am in a turn, the steering feels like it "builds up pressure" and then the steering wheel wants to kick back to center position(happens both ways). I would assume that it would be in the rack and not the pump? Is there a difference between the SVO rack and one out of, say, a 92 GT?

    what's the ratio on a 92 rack?

    84 had (IIRC a TRX rack with) a 20:1

    85, 85.5, 86 had a 15:1

There's something else different - but I'm having a brain freeze right now (chalk it up a a monday) - but I looked at putting new rack in the green car when I was restoring it - and there was somethign else that I had to factor in about the swap.....I *thinking* it might have been something like different end links...or there abouts.

Well, the 92 has 15:1, and the 94-95 has 14.7:1. I have a 92 tubular K-member and 94 tubular control arms...I wanted to put a fresh rack on since it was doing that in the turns. It's quite dangerous...spirited driving into a turn, and the wheel snaps back to center. I've got to fight it to keep it on the line thru the curve.

ahhh - well, if you're changing all of your front end suspension components (especially with the SN95 up arms) - then I would certainly get rid of that rack. The 92 rack would be my preference.

I've seen bad inner tie rod ends cause a similar issue...

there is like 1 inch of play in the wheel, while in a turn, and it kicks back and forth between that 1" , and will almost take the wheel out of your hands at times.

But since you have swapped all the other suspension parts, I would think you would have noticed this.

I haven't made the switch yet...getting all my ducks in a row before I start. The car has 200K miles on it, I'm the second owner (at 198,900 miles). So it could very well be inner tie rods or outers...or...etc......etc........I know the pump is good. No noise, no leaks, clean fluid. The old man was religious with this car. Going through the 18 years worth of receipts, I don't see anything pertaining to the steering.

Sounds like I'll go with a Fox rack and a bumpsteer kit and see if that'll solve the pull.

              It's really easy to check,

              jack the front end up
grab the wheen, and try to turn it left to right.

if it is loose, you will feel it thump, .. it is handy to have someone assist by holding the steering wheel, to make sure you dont turn the rack.
