I recently purchased an 86 svo and am replacing the head gasket. Does anyone have any advice on things to look for, what problems to expect, or what type of gasket I should get? Any input would be appreciated.
gasket info would be -- get the felpro 1035 head gasket.
it is about one of the best head gasket you can use. It does not come in the standard felpro kit, you will have to order it seperately. For best sealing, it is a good idea to surface the head, and check the block, while you have it apart. If the block isn't true, it would be best to surface that too before re-installing.
The other bit of interesting information you will run across is -- if this thing has never been taken apart before, it won't have a exhaust manafold gasket. -- this is normal, and you should put it back together that way.
as far as other tips, If I were taking a head off, I would check the valves, and at least put in new valve stem seals. If you have any lifter noise, now would be the time to swap them out too.
You want to use a Felpro part number 1035 headgasket.
Just make sure it didn't get hot, check to be sure the head is straight and make sure everything is clean. The best thing you can do is clean the threads in the block for the head bolts...NOT WITH A TAP SET!!!! Can't stress that enough, a tap/die set cuts threads, you just want to clean them to insure accurate torque settings. Snap-on and other companies make a thread chaser/cleaner kit....worth EVERY penny if you work on cars on any level! Not many people have these so it may not be easy to find one to borrow.
Get the Ford rubber valve cover gasket. I think the application is for a 93 2.3L Ranger. Nice unit, and will cut way down on the oil leaks.
Also, if you are silly enough to have removed the cam gear (you don't have to to pull the head), you will need to reseal the cam gear bolt to the cam whe you reinstall.
When you get the head off, it is a good time to replace all the rubber heater and oil cooler hoses.
