  • T- Bird intercooler???

i'm new the the SVO world, although ive owned my 82GT for 11 years, but it looked like it would be wise to buy the bigger T- bird intercooler, so i did, boy does it fit like S@!T, is there that much of a performance gain to keep this cockedeyed thing on my car? this is my daily driver, so my modfications will be kept low, which include: Ric Gillis valve, E6, 86 turbo and intake, K&N conical, 3in exh, fuel Pressure reg. or should i have the intercooler modified to fit better, because the gain is worth it? thanks in advance for your input

while the intercooler is bigger, it often does not increase performance. The other webmaster tested this on his SVO, and found that he didn't gain any speed in the 1/4 at all with the larger intercooler, as a matter of fact, he may have actually lost a bit of time...

his deduction was that because even tho the area was larger, there was still the same amount of air to cool it, and without doing some cutting, and changing the gasket to somthing custom, or the t-bird gasket, it was not going to improve air charge cooling..

      Just my e pennies....

I would look into running a front mount I/C....the performance gain is worth it.

BUT....I wouldnt even consider running the car without an IC, I mean its not like it will hurt the car in any way if you dont have one....but it will most certainly increase the chances of detonation as well as an overall drop in performance. ( unless of course you werent even considering this....then i will shut up )

well.. i read the words 82 GT, but It never hit me until now!!!

        (until I saw gators post)_

if you dont have a hole in the hood for the heat to escape, I'd say the intercooler isn't doing much good at all!!!

Front mount IS the way to go!!!

no i have two mustangs, an 82GT and a 84 SVO that i just picked up, sorry for the confusion, but thanks for the help.im still tring to figure out all the stuff that i changed on this car, like it already has an E6 manifold, a water cooled turbo, square style intake.

just dropping in my 2 cents, but I also have an 84 SVO and was thinking about and intake upgrade....I'm thinking twice now. Check out the post "SVO intake Upgrade ??" its more work than I thought and I dont want to drill a hole in my cylinder head. all the mods I have made so far can go back to stock quickly. I think for me the route I will go is buy another 85-86 SVO and Totally go throught the engine mods, injectors, and computer.
As far as the intercooler, I did notice a small difference in accelleration, but it was a bigger intercooler..plus I drilled and tapped to make a by-pass set up for to take the pressure off the turbo and throttle balde without touching my stock part.
MM&FF did a test of temps going in and out of the SVO vs TC intercoolers and it showed a gain in HP and cooling. I think www.TINY AVENGER.com has all the articles of that series but it is best to download them so you can read them.
As to fit, no you cant use the old brackets but just tilt it in the hoses till its at an angle that fits best and tighten down the hoses. its a direct bolt in.
            Biz closed till further notice

my thing was that it looked like S@#T!, so i am going to weld tubing on to the inlet, about 2-21/2 inches to get it level then work on getting it sealed the hood. AND weld some tabs on it so it dont f'in blow off!!! i am going to make my own bypass also.

I just looked at mine and now I remember that when I purchased new intercooler hose i bought them a little long and cut to size. the lower hose raises the intercooler up to stock height and seals at the hood. I got the intercooler hoses from a truck dealer that sells parts for rigs. look in the phone book for a place like that they are always good to know. there is about 2-2.5 inches of space between the turbo and intercooler in the hose.

Eric that was true. One on these days I need to hook up the modified ic from scoop to ic that was cobbled up by Lee Clary.I will get under house and find it and post pics. It may make a difference, however, making another could be a bear. I paid Lee $200.00 for it and never tried it , maybe it's time.

Maybe, but I'd be happy to see that Lee Clary seal. Thanks.
