  • Rattle Cat!

    Gentleman...

You have proven to be so helpful. Got the SVO to the muffler shop because I knew I had a bad cat shield, or bad cat. Shure enough.. bad cat. Looks like somebody ran over something red ( painted ) and it broke loose the insides.

My question. It appears that I have a "stock routed system" meaning 2 mufflers on my 86 that appear to be just big glass packs.. I have the stock exhaust pipes welded on to them. The cat, is aftermarket.. and needs to be replaced. What would you reccommend that I do? I don't want the car louder than what it is now, and I like the stock appearance. Could I just replace the cat... ? Would that be a good move? If so, what do you reccommend.. ? I am looking to fix the rattle, and to not break the bank keeping the system stock in appearance.

The car drives and runs great... just rattles like crazy!!

Thanks again for all of your knowledge!!

    go hi-flow

    Andy,

Just have the cat replaced with an aftermarket hi-flow design.

Anything you can do to help get air IN and air OUT will help the performance of a turbo car. In Dickson county you don't have to go through emissions testing...go with a 3" downpipe and have the muffler shop add an intermediate pipe to connect to mufflers.

You've got an SVO now and your gonna join the SVOCA....so you can leave the MCA mentality (sp?)behind.... you will NOT find anyone here that will condem you for changing anything that adds to performance!

    Boost on brother.....................

I know... It's hard to change.. it just "feels different"... but like a lot of things that "feel different" I kinda like it!!!

What type of cat to you reccommend? Or.. are they all so alike that it just doesn't matter?

      3 in downpipe.... Hrmmmmmmmmmmmm

        ?? glass pack ??

The glass pack shaped mufflers aren't correct for a SVO......they should look exactly like any 5.0 Mustang. I think Walker is the OEM supplier for Ford.

Ask the muffler shop about the hi-flo cat availability. I don't run a cat on my SVO and run a Meineke (sp?) twin 2 1/2" in/out on the Lightning.

Thanks Gary.. I will probally just replace the cat for now for $$$ reasons.. It seems to be a good exhaust system, and the factory look is cool.. ( I know... MCA issues..... I must tell myself daily it IS ok for aftermarket mods... !)

For now... I can't sneak up on anybody... rattle rattle rattle..

          Best!

If you want to go with a new cat, I would recommend a 3" high flow with a 14" case for the lowest restriction.

If you are concerned about noise, get yourself some decent mufflers. Lots of folks who appreciate both quiet and efficiency like the Walker Dynomax. On my 84 SVO in addition to a 3" downpipe, cat and single 3" exhaust pipe, I run a 3" Magnaflow with an 18" long case. It is as quiet as the stock SVO exhaust, but works a whole lot better!

Thanks... I don't know if I will go with the 3 inch system just yet.. if I can get a high flow of some sort, or if there are any aftermarket things I can do with little $$$$ ( we all know how that is.. ) then I will do it..

              Thanks for the advice!
