  • 1/4 mile #'s???

I am looking at buying an 84 SVO located near me since my 93 Cobra was stolen, but I would like it to run the same speeds as my Cobra did-somewhere in the 13s. It has a rebuilt motor with a motorsport cam, turbopeople turbo, 3" downpipe, and 3.73 gears...what else will I need to go 13s, the owner has never raced it in its present trim, so I have no idea how fast it is now. Does anyone have any ideas as to what else it would need? Thanks in advance

It would be real hard to guess what a car would run without seeing it.

It sounds like it has most of the parts that you need to be well into the 13's but alot has to do with the drivers abilities and traction.

The best thing that you could do would be to get a set of slicks and go to the track. You can get a set of 16 inch tires from Mickey Thompson or Hoosier.

You coming to the Reunion? If so, you could have all kinds of people there that would be able to point you in the right direction.

My suggestion - think about upgrading your injectors/computer, fuel pump, and fpr. This will inable you to turn up the boost/fuel.

Ty's right though - if the previous owner has changed out the turbo, cam, etc - there's no telling what else has been done to it. It would be easier if it was seen in person....and adding slicks always make em quicker

I forgot to add that it also has 36lb injectors, a 110lph pump, but still has the stock wastegate, airbox (with K&N), computer, and stock fpr. It also has 2.5" single exhaust with a dynomax muffler. I don't know if this helps what you need to know or not.

change the computer* (see below), remove the stock air box and put a cone directly on the VAM (KN part #0930 - I think), and get an adjustable FPR. With a set of Mickeys - you'll be ready to roll.

*The LA series from from a Turbocoupe works fantasic. Very easy to install (if you have a very small amount of electrical savvy). Just 4 wires have to be switched on the plug itself. Here's a direct link to the pinouts that's listed on GT350R's website

Is LA part of the catch code for the processor, or how do these processors work and where do I find one? I plead total ignorance when it comes to this, my last car was a 5.0, so this is a whole new ball game for me, but I must say that this is hands down the best forum I have ever seen; I have never seen so many people so willing to share information, this is really great. Thanks guys.

You can find them in a 87-88 TurboCoupe (T-bird). The favorite is a LA3, but a LA2 will work just ask fine - even a LB2 will work. The "LB" is for an auto while the "LA" is for a 5 spd. It doesn't matter in our cars if you use a LB series....it'll sill work.

Your processor is located in the passenger side kick panel. Remove it - swap the 4 wires - and reinstall/plug in the new computer. The LA series is programmed for the 35lb injectors (which is what you have, not 36lbs). It's a FASTER processor than your stock one from the 84 (Probably a TE). You car will idle smoother, get better gas mileage, have a snappier throttle response, and just run better throughoutthe entire rpm band....you'll be amazed.

So, you can go to one of 3 places. Find the nearest junkyard, surf the classifieds, or weed through eBay. I normal price for a LA3 will be $40 to $80.

              Good luck.

Well, I think the fellas are right on the money here when they say without seeing the car, it is pretty hard to give advice.

You might want to consider a 3 - inch "downpipe" that will take place of the cat, its a really good bang for the buck piece.

You might want to consider changing intakes to teh later "box" style. They have a better flow in regards to volume, and are a heck of alot easier to port.

Perhaps the best advice is to hop on up to the reuinon ( at least for a day ) and look at some of the cars that will be there and chat with a few people.

                  LA3 Computer

                  Bud,

If I had a completely stock SVO would that computer give me the improvements you list or is it liable to complicate things... I would like to stay away from exhaust / catalytic converter mods, so this one (fuel system / computer based) sounds good.

There's one on eBay now. If I went to a junkyard (a trip I plan to make before it gets cold up here), where on the Turbo coupe would I find this computer - passenger side kick panel again?

                  Thanks!

you asked Bud, but I'll give it a shot..

depends on the year of SVO..

84-85's had computers tuned for 30# injectors,
                    85.5, and 86 had computers tuned for 35# ...
the goal of swaping the computers is to get one that is tuned for the bigger injectors.

And yes.. in the passenger side kick panel, just remove the trim, and sound deadening stuff, and it is pretty easy to see in there...

The reason we didn't recomend the SVO computers is they are generally EXPENSIVE compared to the TC computers.

                      Computers

I'll chime in also just for clarification. The first step is to see which processor is in your SVO. If it has a PE (the preferred SVO processor from 85.5 & 86) your all set. If it still has the 84 SVO processor I would think it would be running a bit rough (large injectors with small injector processor) then you'll need to score an PE processor or a T-Bird processor.

                        Ahhh... got it!

                        Thanks guys!

I'll be asking a lot of basic questions like this...

If anyone needs computer / graphic design help I can give that a shot though! Although I think Eric has that covered as well...

                          one more chime...

SV8O4 stated he had the stock computer - I figured he meant the stock 84 (TE) computer. If he does in fact have a PE from a 85.5/86 - then no, don't go changing computers. BUT - a 84-85 SVO will run with 35 lb injectors and their stock TE or PJ computers. The most you'll notice is it'll run rough/rich at start up on cold mornings (ask Ty). So, yeah - SV8O4 - check to see what computer you have before you go out junkyarding or eBay sniping...but if you have the stock 84 computer, see about changin it - you'll be very happy with the results.

svoson - the only benefit a LA (turbocoupe) series has over a PE (85.5-86 SVO) is the fact that it's a FASTER processor. Meaning - you'll probably see a smoother idle/snappier throttle response as you go to modifying your car. Do I recommend that you change your 86 PE computer out for a TC computer? NO.

Many will argue the 85.5/86 SVO PE computer has more agressive timing/fuel mapping - so it'll make the car faster. I say "whatever" cause I honestly don't know..and I bet they don't either. Fact being - my car runs great...actually, it's running better than it ever has (see Gator bite his nails now). Ty had the exact same processor in his 84, before finding a PE being sold at a reasonable price ...and he said he noticed no difference in performance at the track after swapping them......so, there ya go.
