I checked my tranny fluid for the first time today, and noticed it was low. I was looking in my chilton and it says the tranny takes gear oil, is this true? I know it is different than latter t5 but I thought it still used automatic tranny fluid like them.
All T5 trannys take ATF, not gear lube...period. Fluid brand/type is up to your personal preference. I have been using Mobil 1 synthetic and like it. I also used Valvoline non-synthetic ATF and liked it as well, FWIW.
I transplanted an 84 SVO T5 in a former Mustang and accidentally put gear lube in it. It worked fine until the first 50deg evening when the shifter felt it was stuck in molasses (whoops ). I then learned that T5's use ATF and not gear lube.
i just swaped out my trans...i had Hanlon Motorsports rebuild a trans out of a 87 turbo T-bird. I used Dexron/ Mercon ATF, it took 3.1qts. Its so nice to be able to power shift into 3rd -RICH-
