  • Exhaust/ Downpipe ???

    Hey all,
maybe someone can answer this for me. I'll explain first, and then ask the question.

When I got my 84 I got a complete 86 twin exhaust with it. The mufflers are fried, outsides are fine but there is a nice trail of rust particles whenever I move it, put the pipe work is good. It is complete so I have both tailpipes, the downpipe with cat, although it was cut off rather roughly and the Y pipe.

I was considering putting it on my 84 but can't spring for the new mufflers it will need as well as a 255 pump and AFPR. I also had a 2.5" stainless cat back Dynomax put on my '93 2.3L a while ago so I was going to swap that onto the SVO.

My question is this, can I use the 86 downpipe and make it work, with some fabrication obviously, onto the 84?? I'm going to remove the existing cat and run it straight through. Actually, I guess the question really is will the downpipe bolt to the turbo??

The downpipe will bolt up. You just need to run it as a left side tailpipe exit to keep the exhaust away from the 84 fuel pump under the passenger side floor. Make certain that the muffler shop makes the changes a bolt on, as to make future clutch replacements less of a chore.

Well I had my Dynomax 2.5" system fitted to the SVO today. Turns out the one on there was an Edelbrock, it's now on the 93 and it still has the nice fat sound that the Dynomax had. Seemed to fit no worries, the shop had to make a few pipe bends but it's all good. Next step is to fab a new 3" DP and lose the cat and we;ll see what happens.

you don't really need a AFPR for any of that -- it can be added later at any time. the stock fpr will keep the same pressure with the 255 pump as it did with the stock pump(S)

thanks Eric, was a little unsure on that one. Thanks for the clarification.
