hatchback door lifters

  • hatchback door lifters

    how do you replace the hatchback door lifters, i am 16 and got this car for a birthday present but my lifters are old and do not hold no more and i bought some new ones i want to know how to take out the old ones can any one help?

    There are actually two (2) ways:

    1. Just pull really hard away from the center point on the top and bottom (incorrect)

    2. There are clips at each end that can easily be pulled off of the "ball and socket" type hook-up. Remove the clip, and pull off of the ball at each end. (correct)

    Either one will work, but the second choice lends to adding a longer life to the balls that the shocks hook to.

          Don't forget to get someone to help you hold the hatch up while replacing the struts. There is NOTHING worse than trying to wrestle the old struts off/new struts on while simultaneously trying to keep the hatch up. And, no, a broomstick WON'T cut it!

            I agree with Gene, have a friend hold the hatch up when you do this or you end up with a primative form of a guillotine.

            If you have never tried to lift/hold the hatch w/o the gas struts, you might be surprised of its heft to say the least. I tried holding up my friend's hatch while he replaced his struts with one hand once . . . once.
