  • boost question...may be retarded

quick story...i am very new to svo's and have just recently driven one the first time and will be buying ti this week in all likliness.

with that my question is whe driving in normal mode of oost it drives and has a sort of linear pull i guess. when i flip it to premium it pulls really strong thanks to extra boost but it keeps letting boost go, making more, letting it go, making more. is this normal? its supposed to only have a chip, no boost altering stuff, does it do this stock or does there have to be some boost changing device?

surging is one of the normal issues with the stock boost controler.

Some people say it is a problem, with something in the system,
After looking at a couple, I think it is a design the ford engineers used to make it a little easier on things ???

either way, a manual boost controler will fix that little annoying problem right up

        Foolw up to Eric's comment

It might also be that you are getting detonation under the higher boost levels attainable by switching to premium fule mode. Make sure you are running a good high quality high octane fuel. Make sure the engine is freshly tuned with Motorcraft ingnition components. Your knock sensor could also be getting false knock signals and telling the computer to pull timing a boost to prevent the knocks (read detonation, false or otherwise)

i guess the only way to find out is to put a mbc on it and if it still acts funny i need to get some new plugs and wires possibly? I'll try the mbc and if i still have problems i will post them again, thanks for the help.

If you are seeing this problem at high rpm (above 4000)

to tell if your issue is related to the knock sensor retarding timing, or boost falling of, and back on, Is the boost gauge bouncing up and back ?

at 4000 rpm you should have plenty of turbo to make the stock amount of boost, it shouldn't fall off, unless you are down low in the rpm range.

in other words, at 4000 rpm, if the needle is steady, it is probably something else (KS, plugs, wires ......).. if the needle bounces, it is probably the boost controler.

sounds to me like he's getting 'boost surge' - common with a stock BCS and/or old vacuum lines. I had the same thing with my 2nd SVO...replacing the hoses cleared it up for the most part...but it was still noticable to me.

that's what I call boost surging. when you replace the stock BCS with manual adjustable one....be sure to replace the vacuum hoses as well.

what are these vaccum hoses and how much do they cost and how hard are they to install?

the hoses are cheap, you can usually buy them at autoparts stores for a few cents per foot.

they are very easy to install, just remove the existing hose from the boost controler, and put a new one on. Try to keep the hoses short in length.

One runs from the Turbo housing to the BCS - and the other from the BCS to the wastegate. Even though they might not look it...the smallest of dryrot cracking in them will cause surging...

I was always told to keep them short as possible and the equal lengths.

keep what equal legnths, the two hoses or the hoses as the stock ones?

the two hoses... when sold through Ford - they were always sold in a matching 'pair'
