  • Ran at Barbers yesterday!

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up about running at Barbers.

    Brakes,brakes,did I mention BRAKES???

The imposed speed limit is not too much to worry about because you will only come close to it on 2 parts of the track. I tried hard to see how fast I could actually go on the straights and could only make 105 by going in too deep on the longest one. I know the speed limit thing kind of sucks but you will not be disappointed by this track running 90 or 95.

But all of the other parts are very hard on the brakes, there are several 90 and 180 degree turns at the end of the straights and you will have to scrub off a LOT of speed to stay out of the gravel traps.

The course was very easy on tires nothing like TGPRX and it was a blast!

I am looking forward to going back.

Thats so cool. I can't wait till the reunion so I can run. Hey Ty, did they have a senior citizen's day at the track or something? Calling all old people, come out to Barber and run your car. Handicap parking will be provided in the pits. Free wheelchair service will be offered to those who need it. HaHa, later Chris H

Hey Guys. I think the old guys that Tyrone was referring to was just me and he was being kind to include himself in that statement. We had a blast and ran the whole day without tearing up anything, except brakes. That track is murder on brakes, and I don't mean just pads. I think our cars are going to have to get some 13's up front if you are going to run consistently at that track. I needed to do the change anyway and now I am convinced. The Stillens are good , but not good enough for fast laps on that track. Another thing, this track is smooth as glass and it is very easy on the tires. Now, if I could just find enough ponies to catch ole Tyrone.... Ralph

Are you guys representing and getting a kick-back from the SVO brake vendors or what

I may have to consider upgrading my pads for this event with that report. I was able to survive the TGPRX track with the extra breathing the '96 Cobra wheels give me, but I don't know. I have still never touched my brake pads from when I bought the car back in 1991 and that was ~40K miles ago as well. Hey, I am easy on brakes. Just changed out my SVT Contour's original brakes at 87K and they still have a few thousand left on them.

Now to get the SS piston upgrade kit and chose an appropriate pad compound. Any suggestions?

                Barber and brakes

Guy. I think that it would be safe to assume that if you take your car to Barber with brakes ...stock brakes..... that have been on the car for that period of time and 40,000 miles on them, you will not make many laps if you run any speed at all on your laps. , but I guess your need for new brakes will depend a lot on your speed on the track. Trust me, there are going to be some serious brake burning going on once the racing starts with these 90 and 180 degree turns.
Another think to consider, if you hit anything there with your car, even the smallest scratch on a wall , at Barber you have bought it, and they want a check at the time of collision. This place looks more like a country club type golf resort than it does a race track .They have in place a price list for most anything that you could damage. and don't even think about spilling any liquids on their surfaces. Lots of luck Ralph

Maybe SVORob will let me have the 13 inch brake kit he has had in his garage for the last 3 years

I was stuck at the shop and couldn't go but one of my customers went with his '04 GT that we outfitted with the stage II Kenny Brown suspension kit and just before the event we put the Stillen pads on it as well as brake cooling ducts....his wheels were black that afternoon when he came by.....Brakes are definitely needed there...stock type pads will not cut it for long.

Alright Paul, don't leave me hanging then. What is your recommended setup for pads on a stock caliper/rotor setup then? I do need to get a SS piston upgrade on mine, but what pads beyond that?

Looks like I better pack up an 'emergency' set of pads to help me make my 800 mile trip back home, with the warnings everyone is sending out about this track.
