  • period correct wheels

I am considering new wheels when I buy tires, and I want to stick with something period correct. What were the good (i.e. light) aftermarket wheels of the day that will fit the SVO? I might be able to find some older BBS wheels, but other than that, I don't even know where to start my search. TIA.

The Ronal 16" 5 lug spoke wheels used on the early Saleens fit, look good and are period correct for the SVO. I have a set on my 86 SVO and like them very much! ROH also made a 16" 5 lug with the correct offset in a spoke design that is period correct (AT6SVO has a set on his 84). Perhaps he will read this and post a pic of his beautiful car!

I personally like the black mesh wheels (BBS?) that came on the fox saleens.

SSR made some 5 lugs for the Nissan 300ZX Turbos the corresponding years to SVO production. They looked similar to the BBS, were much lighter than the stock wheel, and bolted right up.

ARE made some that fit the Probe. I had a set for a while and I sold them to buy a set of stock wheels.

Good luck finding any Saleen specific wheels cheap. I could not find a set of Ronal's in good shape under $800. I also think the BBS mesh style wheels look good in black or gold depending upon the color of the car.

I have a set of 4 lug Mesh in Black from my 92 I think they are Enkei... ARE look like crap compared to these. ARE were totally smooth around the lug area. The "webs" of the mesh come up and around the lug holes on mine. I have seen 5 lug versions occasionally, but not for a long time... Thats why my 4 lugs are in the rafters of the garage with my original Saleen ground effects!

                Who me?

I am very partial to ROH ZR6 wheels, as shown here. Unfortunately I found out the hard way that the 17" versions DO NOT clear 13" cobra brakes w PBR calipers...

I too like the 90-93 Saleen/Ronal wheels but they are $$$ if you find them...

Mike, did you make the center caps?? Or did they come that way?? I really like the SVO in there.. Reminds me of the SVT wheels/caps..

                    Dave,

I made the center caps. I removed the ROH plastic plate, cut out sheetmetal inserts, painted them, used 3M tape and then added the 85.5/86 SVO emblems (emblems require a very small amount of timmming to fit).

Thanks for the compliment & hope that helps!

The 87/88 mesh 5 lug wheels where made by ARE. Marc at Performance Autosport has a few sets at 900 bucks.

The 16 inch mesh wheels on my 86 Saleen (original) are solid around the center and ARE the Enkie wheels.

In 86 Saleen used Enkie and Ryken for the wheels. The Ryken wheels are mesh all the way to the center like you desrcibed not the Enkies.

I have the Ronal R9s on the SVO in all black and love them. I will either polish the lips on them or have them powder coated in white. The all black looks like crap in pics and from 20ft away but look really good up close.

                          My SVO with the R9s

Kind of a crappy pic and I have 245/50/16s all the way around with no rubbing in the front and the car is dumped on a set of springs from a SN95 V6 car. No idea what brand they are but its LOW.

If price is an issue as it always is for me...you can also use a set of basket style 16x7's from a late model Crown Vic. Or the BBS wheels from Mark 7...someone on here had a set installed and they looked sweet!

Maybe mine are the Ryken, its been 6 months since I've been in the rafters... IIRC there were only like 3 or 4 mfrs. at the time for these style wheels.
