  • Lowered cars - need tire size advice?

I plan on putting a set of FMS C springs on the '86 here shortly. Presently the car has 225/50's on the front and 255/50's on the rear (it just a set of rollers that have a little bit of tread left).

What size tire can I get away with on the stock rims before sugery is required on the wheel wells? BTW, I should be doing a full bushing job the same time the springs go on so that should limit "some" flex. Oh, this will be predominatly a track-only car that I "might" drive around on the weekends. Thanks.

I have Eibachs - about 1 1/2-2" lowered over stock ride height. I run the stock factory size tires - 225/50/16s - no modifcations to the car. No rolling the lips of the fenders - nothing.

If you use a larger/wider tire width on the factory rim - the tire will start to 'roll' in the turns...not good.

I would say a 235 width tire would be the widest w/o surgery on the wheel wells, but that is an "oddball" size. I was running 245/50's on stock rims in the back and did rub on the outer wheel well once with a good load in the car and stock suspension. A 225 section tire is optimum for a 7" width rim, so you could go with a 225/45 to keep some clearance with the lowering springs. Just my $0.02.

Bought a set of 225/50 Yoko AVS Intermediates on closeout from tirerack. Also picked up:

        FMS C springs
Energy Supsension front control arm bushings, sway bar bushings, end links, tranny mount, and ball joint covers

Should be getting some tubular upper and lower rear control arms this evening and a 255 high pressure fuel pump.

Hopefully in the next couple weeks, I should be putting the ported and polished head on the car with a Felpro 1035. Then turn up the boost (GN compressor side on the T3 (.63 AR)) to 22-23psi with race gas.

All in all, I should have a completely different car from what I've been tinkering with for the past year. Let's see: new Koni's, all new brakes and rotors, new bushings, new springs, new tiress, Spec Stage III clutch, ported and polished everything, new 3" exhaust, ummm, but other than that, it's still the same car! Maybe Santa will bring me an EEC Tuner so i can have an excuse to get a big turbo and some big injectors.

I'll just make sure I "go potty" before I race it.

Just won the rear arms and the high pressure pump off ebay btw.
