  • Massive grey smoke out of tail pipes

I have a 85.5 SVO. It started blowing massive grey smoke out of the tail pipes.

I had the head checked at two different speed shops, head tested ok.

I had the turbo checked and rebuilt at two differant shops.

It still is blowing massive grey smoke after the motor comes up to temperature.

Motor has been pressure tested hot and no pressure leakage any where.

It has had the dye test - passed.

    Compression test - Passed

    HELP!

Black to gray smoke out the tail pipes is usually a sign of excessive rich condition (i.e.- unburnt fuel). From the factory our cars run very rich up top to stave off detonation/pre-ignition and will give a small puff. If your car is sending off smoke screens, then something else is up.

Is your ignition up to snuff (i.e.- fresh Motorcraft parts)? Is your catalytic converter OK? Just remember that diagnosing things over the internet can be hit or miss. The more info you can supply about your ride the better.

      oooh oooh that smell....

Fred described the smoke to me over the phone as more of a light grey to white smoke that does has a sweet smell to it, not a petrolium type burning smell. Smoke only starts AFTER the car has warmed up to temp, NOT when first started.

The "sweet" smell to me says anti-freeze.

But the grey does indicate running rich....

Hmmmm.......few Q's....Head was checked as true flat..? Head gasket ( what kind ) ..? Temp doesnt rise all of a sudden..? Bolts or head studs..? No Puddles of antifreeze..?

        Now for the grey....

Whats the fuel pressure under boost look like..? what do the plugs look like..?

This is what Fred told me....

Head off twice and checked once, rebuilt second time.

Turbo off twice, first time installed used turbo (same problem), had original turbo rebuilt by Turbo specialties...reinstalled and same problem. Using Felpro gaskets.

Have not driven car to check under boost, can't get past warm up, smoke starts BADLY as soon as car warms up.

No signs of lost antifreeze, none in oil, no leaks.
