  • sun roof ever an option?

I'm new to the SVO gig and I'm currently looking at an 85 to purchase.

It has a sun roof installed (pop up kind- removable) and wanted to know if this would have been a factory option?

Also is there any way to validate a vin to see if it is early or late 85 model? I can't make out the door tag- it is either 3/85 or 8/85.

I know the 85.5 is the most desirable.

the SVO's did come with a pop-up sunroof.

if it is a 85.5 it will have dual exhaust, that is the biggest difference. it will also have a 3rd brake light .

As far as vin, there is no difference. the year character reads as a 85, on 85, and 85.5 cars.

about the only thing you can verify is that it is a SVO, the vin will start with

Just the 86 got the 3rd brake light. Surely just a brain fart on your part

Don't forget the 85.5 had flush headlights, although many older models have this upgrade. Also I think (but am not sure) that the 85.5 was the first model to have dual illuminated visor mirrors, low oil warning lamp, and charcoal (instead of chrome) dome light housing. Someone please tell me if this is right or not...

        You are right..
I was thinking the difference between 85.5, and 86 is the 3rd brake light... that is right.. the 85.5 DOES NOT have the 3rd brake light.

I was thinking it right.. just typed it wrong..

I just assumed everyone knew the 85.5 was flush headlights, but I should have brought it up.

I don't really have any info on the other 3 things, but am more than welcome to hear what everyone else has seen.

biggest way to notice right off would be the headlights and exhaust (as mentioned). Or that mysterious 3rd brake light option Eric was eluding to...

early 85 - receased headlights, single exhaust on driver side with chrome split tip.

85.5 - flush mounted headlights - dual exhaust (from just after the cat-back).

Seems the half year was split in 6/85 on the production line.

Thanks for the info. Is there anyway to tell if the sunroof was a factory as opposed to aftermarket installation?

The car I'm looking at has recessed headlights but dual exhaust so it is a early 85 car with the wrong exhaust- correct?

Yes!! Take a gander at the sticker on the driver's side door frame/door and look under 'S'. If the option was factory a 'C' will be printed there. Good luck!
