  • Is anyone running 4.10's

I am the proud owner of a new set of FOMOCO 4.10 gears. The 84 SVO has the stock rearend and I'm just curious if these will be too deep. I'm not concerned about highway, mileage, etc. as I only drive this car about once every month or so.

    I have

I have 4.10's in my 86. It buzzes too high for me on the highway and first gear is really short. I would rather have the 3.73's.

      4.10's

I think Ted Schafer runs 4.10 gears in his SVO and just drove to the Reunion from Chicago area.

Step in here Ted and tell us about it...............

If you are going to drive the car everday on the street you might not like the gears. It's a lot of gear and makes first gear almost useless. I have it in a beater and it really makes driving the car on the street hard, but if you race it you will love it. Ralph

SVOs came stock with 3:73s right? So the next step down is a 4:10? You guys with 4:10s, mind telling the rest of us what speeds you get at red line in 2nd, 3rd and 4th?

              Early vs. Later Trannies

If you are still running an '84 tranny, I would take any comments from '85-'86 owners with a grain of salt. The '84 cars started with a 3.45 rear, not a 3.73.
The '84 cars came with a 4.03 first gear, while the later cars came with a 3.50 first gear. In other words, first gear is going to be real short. Worse than for an '85-'86 car.
Also, the fifth gear for an '84 was .86, while the fifth gear for the later cars was .78. An '84 with a 4.11 is going to run a higher rpm on the highway than a 4.11 equipped '85-'86 (about 10% higher).

Gary, thanx for the plug. I have had 4.10's in my car since I swapped in the 8.8 rear about 6 years ago. I like them, but don't know if I would bother swapping up from 3.73's if that was all I was doing.

As for highway cruising, the 4.10's will give you a 3000rpm cruising speed of about 67mph with 245/45R17 tires. I would guess that it would be a bit slower with stock height tires and keeping it under 3000rpm. Keeping it under 3000rpm still nets me ~28mpg on the highway. Around town the 4.10's are just fine from a shifting standpoint and not too much different than the 3.73's.

Of course Chris has an 84, which throws a different angle at things as Carl mentioned. The 84-85 SVO's had a different tranny gear set, so their 1st gear would be quite short with 4.10's and the highway cruise rpm would be up there. In general I would recommend 3.73's for 84-85 owners, while 85.5-86's could go for 4.10's. It all comes down to personal preference, though.
