  • SVO intake upgrade ???s

I have the early 84 style intake with the ports inline. What all has to be done to upgrade to the 85-86 style with the ports in a square? What other parts do I need to pick up or change? What size is the stock SVO throttle body? Thanks.

If im not mistaken the only thing that you would need are the intakes ( duhh...like I needed to mention that ) and the fuel rail.

I think Ty might be able to help in this one.

Do I need a fuel rail, fuel rail bracket, dipstick tube bracket and drill a hole in the head? I have an 84 svo with the inline intake?

madadder - believe you have covered it all there. The biggest - or should I say - the most difficult part of the swap is...the 'drill a new hole in the head" and tap - otherwise, it's a pretty easy swap.

Yes you will need all of that stuff and drill and tap the head for the new intake bolt on the #1 intake port.

If you have not already changed out the valve stem seals to the 87-88 Turbo Coupe ones, you could get a head set from Ford and have all of the new intake gaskets along with the good valve stem seals and the reusable valve cover gasket.

I know it would be a little more work but everything is going to be exposed anyway.

I have a question to add to this if I may. Since I have the '84 non-indented valve cover on my '84 SVO, and I have a spare square intake upper and lower I can gut and port, don't I have to use either a new valve cover or use a spacer to clear the current valve cover? Personally, I'd like to keep the original valve cover and was wondering if anyone already knew the height of the spacer needed - or am I all wet and there is an alternative?
                -thanks

From what I have been told, the SVO had no dip in the valve cover so you cant use a TC intake without switching to the TC valve cover. If you have a 85-86 SVO intake with no lettering down it , then it will bolt right on. Except for drilling another intake hole in the head. I dont know if I like that idea.

                    Thank you madadder,
Yeah, that's the deal. I have a free (on my workbench) tc intake. I was hoping to add a spacer between the upper and lower but don't know the height yet, nor if that would cause a hood clearance problem. If I can add a spacer and the hood fit, I'll drill the hole, otherwise I'll just leave it alone.

The spacer would have to be 1". Thats what everyone has been telling me. You could make it out of aluminium, but phenolic would be great.

I was running a search and was looking for imformation on swaping intakes on my 85'SVO (older). I wondering if the bolts are the same lenght on both inline intakes and square intakes? Both intakes looks the same thickness but just wanted to make sure.

Tip for those people about to do this swap.

There is like 3 fuel rails for the different 2.3T intakes : inline intakes, older style sqaure, and the newer TCs style.

I'm swaping in the older square set and I got the Fuel rail for it. There was one small problem...There is a spacer that goes inbetween the rail and FPR which I didn't get with the rail. Both the inline and the 87-88' TC's has a counter sunk part on the fuel rail for the FPR. I was finnaly able to get one from a good friend off TF ( Thanks Jaime )

Madadder what computer are you running? Did you upgrade to larger injectors? There is no proof that I know of in changing the from an inline to a square that you will see any horespower gains. If you haven't already, I would just upgrade to a PE or LA3 and 35 lb. injectors and see what that does. I did the swap and I am thinking of getting the inline extrude honed when I put the next motor in it.

I have the extra hole drilled on my head here is a link on most of this stuff being done. My next plan is to install :LA3 ( I already and ACT dilled and ready), 35lb injectors(cleaned ready) etc. That is why I really just want to make sure both intake bolts are the same size.

As for improvement differences in the intakes I couldn't tell you. All I know is not a lot of people out here swaping there square intakes to the inline intakes. Almost like the bigger TB threads not one talks about reinstalling the old smaller one

                            Thanks for the help

Perhaps I missed the question, but the lower intake casting to head uses the same bolts. Cut the new hole in the head, apply teflon tape for sealing and move the one bolt to the new hole.

As for the upper to lower attachment, the inline design uses 6 bolts whereas the square one uses only 4. If I remember that far back, the inline used 10mm hex head bolts with washered faces and the square used mostly 13mm hex head bolts - all same thread size and length. I used the 10mm bolts myself except for the stud mentioned next. The square setup had a brace coming off the left front bolt/stud of the intake upper-to-lower with a brace to the rear outer bracket of the alternator - kinda restricting the easy access to the top of the distributor. This brace isn't needed for the conversion and won't fit unless the PS and Alt brackets are changed also.

When you're done, you'll have two extra bolts and a small assortment of dipstick/injector harness brackets. That reminds me: the dipstick tube is different between the two manifold setups - the bends are slightly different. The dipstick is the same though. You'll need to fabricate a small right-angle bracket to mount the top of the dipstick tube (vice, hammer, drill).

                              Hey thanks

After posting this question about 3 times on 3 different forums I got bored and tryed the inline bolts out which worked great. Now I got the lower intake bolted to the head and I'm now ready to install the head. I figured it was easier this way instead of installing the lower intake after the head was on. All this work just to change a exhaust mainifold

P.S. Thanks for the heads up on the dip stick, in all my research that is the first time I've heard that while doing this swap
