Anyone running a Ranger Roller Cam in their car?

Please post a review here. I am looking for input to the benefits of running one. It is a very cost effective upgrade.

Please also post what year of truck is acceptable to swap in to our cars. Also if automatic or stick matters, etc.

Thanks, in advance, for your input!

I'm running a Ranger Roller on my 86. I installed the cam and had the head freshened(stock valves) at the same time. The performance increase seemed minimal although it did idle smoother and pull a little higher in the RPM range. Because of the head work and cam being done simultaneously I'm not sure how much the cam affected performance. I can tell you that the car is otherwise stock with a KN cone on the Vam with 73,000 miles. On it's only trip to the track it ran 14.66 with a 2.11 60' on the stock radials. I'm sure that slicks would be worth at least 3-4 tenths. Anyway, I hope the info was helpful. If you check the archives you'll find plenty of posts on cam choices. Turboford.org also has a wealth of info.

Yes, it does. The only problem is - you have to wade through a pile of BS and then be able to sort fact from fiction...which can be pretty hard at times.

          Bud,

You are definitely right about that, there are a lot of different opinions on a wide variety of cam choices. Everything that I read on the RR though seemed pretty consistent with what I've experienced; inexpensive cam upgrade with modest performance increase. To me it seemed kinda' like the "safe" choice for my otherwise stock SVO.
By the way I neglected to mention my trap speed(93.37) in my previous post.

yup - just looking at it though ... it's a little smaller than a stock 86 cam, so it sounds like the major difference is you're swapping sliders for rollers .... of course, this is ALL opinion as I have no firsthand knowledge with the cam. I had a A237 cam in my first SVO ... really liked that one, but it was basicly the ONLY thing on the market in 1989 that I knew about

I'm currently *looking* to narrow my cam choice for the near future ... and I think I'll spend a little bit more money to find something to fit my set up - instead of using something on the market and mold a set up around it. If that makes sense?

richsvo - hopefully - we can get some more people like Tom that can add relevant/experienced info to the conversation for you and less of my 'blah-blah-blahs'

              Tom,

Thanks for the input. I had gotten some input from Eric, as well, and he said he would post it if I posted this thread. So, Eric...wanna chime in? (he is presently running one too)

              Bud,

Don't sweat the "blah-blah". You are absolutely right about Turboford. I like the massive exchange of info, but it is a little much sometimes, and you don't always get a cut and dry answer.

I am presently considering the Ranger Roller, mostly because of price/availability, and the fact that it is a roller. (that alone frees up h.p.) I have also heard that when used with an adjustable cam sprocket to retard or advance the cam timing, it is a very versatile cam. (allowing for gains on top, or more on bottom) I am mostly looking to get about 300 rwhp, without a bunch of crazy and expensive engine rebuilding. I am a firm believer this can be done fairly easily with other "bolt-ons". I want to change the cam, and get a larger turbo that spools early, in order to get that "quick" power, not necessarily all top end.

Thank you both for the input, and hopefully others can join in with their experiences. I KNOW there are more of you out there!

              Anyone?

will be getting my car back pretty soon with a friends custom grind, it is supposed to be a mild roller cam. It will be hard for me to know the difference though:

                simultaneous mods include:

                ENGINE - 2.5 Stroker
                HEAD - Big Valves Ported
                TURBO - Turonetics T3/T$
                Exaust:
                ATR Header
                3" Downpie to 3" Y-pipe to Dual 2 1/4" mufflers

                Ported upper/lower intake manifold

WALLET - Ripped a new one!

...so it will be hard for me to attribute any performance to just the cam, but I'll post about the idle - I really wanted a smooth idle

I may have met 2svos before once upon a time. Keep us posted on that cam. How is the header holding up?

I'm right next to the city of Whittier and spend most of my time in Orange County. Can't say anything about the header as of yet, I'm still waiting to get my car back - it has like 2 miles on it since the stroker has been put in, just waiting for the exaust to finished - but I'll let you know about the cam and header... fingers crossed on that one
