  • Best SOUNDING dual Exhaust for my 85.5

    Hello all,

I wanted to ask this because one thing that I do not like about our SVO's is the "weak" sound of our stock exhaust systems. I say stock, but I think the previous owner put some newer stock style mufflers on the car...they are not the original 85.5 mufflers, but they don't sound very good. I know this will sound impossible, but I love the sound of the mighty v8 exhaust and wanted to know if there was an exhaust system that somewhat makes our 4-bangers sound a little "throatier"? I have the cat on the car (probably clogged), which may not be helping things. A few years back, I had a Porsche 944 Turbo that had a 3 inch exhaust with a Dynomax muffler on it. I also had no cat and it sounded pretty good. Fortunately, where I am, they do not do smog/emissions testing.

Is the best thing to do is to get a 3 in DP with no cat and some nice Borla/Magnaflow/Flowmaster/Dynomax muffers? Is that the best route for a throaty sound. I am not really looking to pick up a ton of ponies, just want something better than my "weak" sounding exhaust. I know I will never be able to replicate the throaty rumble of a v8 Mustang, but wanted to see what is the best thing out there that will come close. Again...I am not looking for a big HP increase, although I would take it as an added bonus.

    Thanks in advance.

I like a 3" dp into a Magnaflow high flow cat, into a 2.5 Magnaflow catback system.

Everybody says to stay away from Flowmaster and flowmaster type mufflers on the turbo motors. The pulses in the exhaust from the way they're made tend to do funky things with the turbos I guess. Somebody besides me probably has a better technical explanation.

I always liked my Borla Mufflers. I have Mac now and they are much louder. If I could easily do it I would put the borla back on.

Do the MAC mufflers make it sound throatier? I like the rumble of a v8, but I know I will never duplicate that with a 4 banger. I just want something more than my stocker stuff.

            sounds like 1/2 of a v8.
            (not to be a smartass)
Is sounds like a mild 5.0. It sounded deeper with the borlas though.

              My dumb story

My 84 daily driver ended up with a really great sounding exhaust after an accident. It sounded really nice, very throaty, and had a great rumble to it. I'd say it was as close to a nice V8 sound as you could get. It wasn't the annoying loudness that I have on my race car (3" strait exhaust).

What ended up happening is when I got hit, it knocked the muffler loose on both ends of the muffler, so it was just able to slide back and forth on the pipe.

I replaced it with a magnaflow and it sounds OK, but not as nice as it did with the broken muffler.
Hoping to get on the track soon

Greg, I have the Sac 3' DP into a magnaflow high flow cat and and the ATR 2.5 SS cat back. The magnaflows are similar. I believe Ken Potter's friend Greg has the setup on his car.

I wish someone was close so I can hear their exhaust in person.

Welcome to the first sign of middle age. I bet, like Colonel Sanders' chickens, that you thought the pecker was the first thing to go! Now you need to learn how to read lips. Not to worry. Look at how many NHRA crew chiefs can hold a perfectly normal conversation while their top fuel car is running right next to them.
