  • Replacement Shift Knobs

Product: 99 Cobra Leather Shift Knob
    Mfg. by: Ford Motor Company

    Overall Rating: Recommended

I replaced my origianal SVO Shift Knob with this unit. It screwed right on (re-threaded it self) and looks fantastic. It ends up being shorter than the stock SVO set up and you can put the stock knob away for shows. You can buy 10 of these for the price of one NOS SVO Knob.
Currently without a SVO or Mustang.

    Mustangs I have Owned: 79 Cobra 2.3 Turbo, 88 LX 5.0 Notchback, 86 SVO 2R.

does the knob match the boot very well? it looks like they are completely different colors, but i know that sometimes cameras exaggerate differences that can barely be detected in person. i have the exact same knob sitting in my room waiting to be installed on something, but mine looks like a darker color than that...i think..?

            does it match

The Cobra knobs are a bit lighter in color butt they match the interior and in my personal opinion it looks fine. See picture a couple of posts above.

              Hurst handle thread size

Call me crazy, but I prefer the original knob. However, I did purchase a '94 Cobra knob to install while I had the original knob recovered. The thread size for the original Hurst handle is METRIC 12mm 1.50 pitch. With this information, you can add any shift knob to your original handle provided you rethread the knob. I got the tap at Sears and it takes a 13/32 drill bit. I've thought about machining a copy of the factory knob out of billet but haven't had the time.

                A word about billet knobs...
I was out at Putnam Park with Kenny Brown when they were testing their Green car (Kermit)... They had a Porsche driver, can't remember his name, driving the car, full race suit, gloves, etc... Anyway, While they were between runs, one of the mechanics hopped in the car to move it, and burned his hand on the shift knob! Almost couldn't put it in gear it was so hot! I don't know if this was because of the exhaust configuration on this car, or what, but it's something to think about.
I know that change in my ashtray gets extremely hot, (3" downpipe running right underneath it) so I'll never be putting a aluminum shift knob on my car.
If it ain't broke... Give me some time!

                  Dave ,

I have a 35th anniversary billet knob on my svo with no problems, must be the exhaust.

BTW... Thanks for the tip on Lowes having interior trim screws!!!!
Duhhh!!!! Why dont ya put a 5.0 in that car George???
