Am I correct to assume that the SVO rear and 5.0 rear use the same axles? That would mean I would use svo axles and backing plates/exsisting disc brakes with a 8.8 housing and diff. Is this correct??? Thanks.

There are differences in the brake lines between early and late SVO's. On the early SVO's the flexy line is on the middle of the right half of the axle. On the late SVO's the flexy line is in the middle of the car. If you swap a late SVO to 8.8 you should replace the flexy line with one made for the 8.8 . I asked my parts counter guy for one to fit an '86 5.0

Also not to people that the early slapper bar cars, do not have the mounts for the quad shocks. You can get away with running with out the quad shocks, for as they really a rather worthless if you run a good set of control arms.
Also for the people taking a Mark VII rearend like so many 5.0 guys do. The axels will not work. I have them sitting at my house. The SVOs are about a .5" longer.
just a few tips.

what year 5.0?
I swapped in an 8.8 out of a '95 GT and left all the '95 brakes on it as I plan to get offset caliper brackets and use the Cobra brakes to match my fronts.
The '95 8.8 is about 3/4" (total) narrower than the SVO unit.
Just an FYI.Wally Casten
86 SVO-taxicab yellow
