  • 3" elbow build

I just finished my 1st 3" elbow. Thought it was going to be easier than it turned out to be but I can say I did it myself! If I were building a new system from scratch i would have bought one from Bob but I wanted to match my exsisting exhaust so this was how it went.

As you can see above there are substancial gains to be had comparing the old hole to the new! Next it was cut and fit(easier said than done) Stainless sure has a good memory!!!Then I had Marni weld it all together. Add o2 bung and that is it!

Man that lookies like a prize from the speed shop. Very nice and to me the very best thing you can do to the exhaust side of these engines.
      Good Job!

I applaud your efforts, that was not an easy task to mate the 3" SS to that cast flange. I'm just curious why you didn't opt to buy a SS flange for a T-3 & just forget about the cast elbow? The piece is very affordable or you could have cut your own SS flange. You can purchase a flange through precision turbo or many other turbo compnaies. http://www.precisionturbo.net/turbo-...tegory_id=3031

Here is the one we made for mine from a flange I purchased through PT&E. I am running an external WG but they also have flanges for internal WG as well.

THe cheaper the better. Have to save the pennys for the next upgrade.

I didn't because the header I bought didn't have a option for an external wastegate. Looking back, I do kinda wish I had gone external, and I may have to revisit that at some point.

Once I get this setup, and running, I'll see what I think of the performance of the Bob's log header I have, and if it want to switch to a tube header. If I want to keep the log, I don't think it would be a big deal to add the WG port.

That is a nice clean setup you have. do you have a better pic of the wastegate setup? Looks like it comes right off the turbo exhaust housing in that pic. Don't think I've seen one like that. I also don't see a return, so does it dump?

The good friend that helped me make this up owns a machine shop, (he knows metal, and welding) and he told me the cast to stainless weld isn't the strongest. I will be adding a short flex pipe on mine, to try to help the life-span, but he didn't expect this piece to last forever. He does tend to over-engeneer things tho

Also, that looks like a centermount header you have there, which moves the turbo forward. Would there still be enough room there if the turbo wasn't pushed forward ? It looks like it will (because you are getting rid of the WG housing.

When I made mine, I found that the 3inch pipe was too large to fit the housing, but there was plenty of room at the bottom. So I stuck the 3-inch SS pipe into a vice, and made it oblong. that made it fit almost perfectly onto the housing I had cut.

you may also notice 2 things about the housing I used,
                  1 -- It's not stock ford, and
2 -- check out the size of that flapper!

I don't have the money to do an external wastgate so I needed to do it this way. If I had the money I would have gone to a header too!

There are SS flanges that allow you to continue to use your internal WG. I know this because PT&E went over that option when I was working on the design for my set up. My WG does just dump into the atmosphere. I did this because I didn't want to add any potential back pressure in the exhaust system. Precision was concenered about that because any sanctioning body would require it to dump back into the system. For my case I am not going to be associated with a sanctioning body so I had no concern.
Unfortunately I can not find the pics of the WG dump. It was a scrap piece of SS stock cut to make the flange & a scrap piece of SS 1.75 diam to make the dump pipe. It follows the down pipe. I am thinking we need to add a bellows to the down pipe to make sure it is not too rigid as it attaches to the rest of the exhaust.

Great, that was my next purchase from Bob or Stinger........now you got me going for this again (pics)........it'll cost me about $160.00 more with the additional flanged downpipie that bolts on. I've got a BRAND NEW stock elbow too.....

I would have bought that one as well, I looked long and hard at it. but my turbo required a 1.3 inch flapper, ATP said theirs was 1.25.

Yea, I know it's fairly easy to put a new flapper on, but I just hate buying something new like that, and start grinding on it.

Well I ran the car for the first time with it on and WOW! I added a 63 turbine housing ( had a 48 ) and was concerned about higher boost threshold but with the 3" elbow it comes in at the same place or maybe earlyer! Before 2800 i am building boost and 3000 its 18 LBS!!! Very pleased with it.

exhaust is the best place to start. Then watch your fuel!
