  • Intercooler brackets (Please help)

The brackets which hold the inetcooler in place seem to be the cause of a major rattle when my engine gets above 4000 RPM. I think it is coming from where the little metal knobs on the brackets attached to the intercooler sit in the brackets coming off of the motor. They don't fit completely tights so at high RPM they rattle in the holes. Is there supposed to be a rubber grommet or something which dampens the vibration between these two pieces? I just can't imagine it being designed as metal on metal as that would be bound to make noise. Please help. If parts are supposed to be there where can I get them? If not what should I so to stop the vibration?

yeah, there's suppose to be a bushing in there. yeah, it's VERY common that they rot and fall off. If the rattlin continues - it may get picked up by the Knock Sensor and hurt performance.

As far as I know - there's no offical replacement part from Ford anymore (or anything aftermarket).

Couple of things you can do

    - pull the brackets. That's what I did on my 85 when I installed a TC IC.
    - use some black or clear silicone as a make-shift bushing. That's what I did on my 86 2R show car.

        About the bracket buschings...

Just to put in my couple of cents, i used some black electrical tape around the round knobs of the brackets (about once around) and that made a tight fit, tight enough so that the bracket does not rattle. I haven't had any problems with the tape melting or anything and i am in Phoenix right now, (Hell)(100*+ at times). Also, sometimes i just leave the brackets off, unless you have like the stock, flimbsy hoses, then i would recommend leaving them on. Turbonetics.com sells some pretty tough turbo hoses, try them.

          Buzzing Brackets

I used the high temp silicone / gasket material on mine as well and it hasn't rattled in years. Just clean the opening real well and apply a thin bead then assemble. You can use black, clear, or copper depending on how neat you want the appearance. I used the black silicone and you can't tell it's there.
