  • Super quiet exhaust ?

    Hey guys,
I want to get rid of my 3" side exit. What I want is to build a super quiet high flow exhaust.
When I jump on it, I just want to hear the air rushing into the turbo. I have a custom made 3" cold air with a K&N in the fender. I can always hear the air rushing in, but my exhaust is loud too.
I figured this would be the smartest place to post this question without a bunch of clowns just guessing. Tony

I'm not sure how much this will help, but I have duals from a stock 03 cobra (IRS) on the back of my 1C SVO, and it's pretty quiet. (maybe a little too quiet)

My wife really likes it tho. still has a pretty decent sound. only down side, the stock pipes are 2 1/4 inch. So I'm going from a 3" downpipe, into 2 - 2.5's, which hit the cat-back, and go to 2 1/4

I had a 3" elbow into 3" DP into a 3" HF cat to custom 3" Y (made at a local muffler shop) with excellerator 2 1/2" mufflers and 2 1/2" 5.0 tail pipes. The combo was so quiet I hated it but it does keep me out of trouble. If you stood behind it and did a holeshot by the end of 2nd gear you could not hear it going straight away from you! Its been about 4 years now and the mufflers are starting to burn out and now it has a decent sound! Still when a helmet is required I can't hear the car at all!

High flow and quiet? Aren’t those inverts?

Make you pipes as large as possible the tone goes deeper; to some goes quieter. Velocity is also decreased. Spread the love. Use multiple mufflers. Halfling the flow decreases the noise. Look for a muffler with the largest internal surface area as possible. Strait flows need large tubular areas. Thus they become long with quietness.

Mufflers with baffles are anti-high flow. But are very quiet by directing the noise to the absorbing material and not the tail pipe.

One word: Dynamat. Doesn't impact your high-flow exhaust but significantly quiets the inside of the vehicle.

Also, change your side exit exhaust so that it goes out the back or on the side opposite the driver. I had mine dumped in front of the axle and it made my ears bleed. Had the muffler shop put together a mandrel-bent over-the-axle design, now its just a nice mellow sound inside the car, but it still scares women, children and small animals. I've thought about adding a Supertrapp, that way you can tune the exhaust with the addition or deletion of discs from the pack.

So you did spend time listening to the guy who teaches you to talk to your dog ! Aren't Halflings Dungeon and Dragons characters ? I better get the neighbors dog to clear this up.

I get what your saying, but I dont need the 3" straight thru V8 sound and I have seen and heard super fast turbo cars at Englishtown that didnt have loud exhausts. I want to hear the intake side of the motor more.

Rob wagner made over 300 hp last year with his blue SVO, that was single 3 inch exhaust and double mufflered. He pulled one of the mufflers off this year, and made it a bit louder.

I was just looking on Stinger's page at the over the axle pipes. I am going out back again for clearance. Crappy part is, the exhaust only drags going in and out of my driveway. Volvo is the same with stock exhaust.
I wonder how it would be to go down pipe----Bullets mufflers---tail pipe. Having the whole under car section be bullet mufflers. Im willing to try anything even those twisted muffflers in the Jeg's book.

I have Stinger's 3" to dual 2.5" exhaust with Magnaflows. I think it's pretty quiet. It got louder when I put the ported head and cam on, but IMO it's still quiet, especially considering how much power it makes.

I think you are talking about two different things here. Glen Tinsley's 84 Super Stock SVO had little more than a downpipe off the back of the turbo. The thing sounded like a Pro Stock Yamaha at idle, but when he put his foot in it in gear, all you could hear was intake. The turbo muffled almost all the engine exhaust sound.

3" with a good muffler (and cat) along the line, exiting out the back, will do a lot to quiet the engine exhaust sound. The tailpipe, especially a large one will do a lot of muffling on its own.

A factory dual system will do a pretty good job, too, with it's 1-5/8" inlets into the muffler. ;-) With a K&N cone on our 86, almost all we can hear is the turbo spool. Sweet sound of a turbo. :-)

The quietest system I had was my borla cat back over the axel with 2 2.5". a magnaflow cat and stinger 3" downpipe. I have a mac now and it is way too loud.

freind of mine has full 3 inch on turbo coupe with 3 inch dynomax super turbo all you really hear through exhaust is turbo. they make a super turbo that is full 3 inch inside probably still restrictive but super quit.

If you are going to look at a dynomax then get the ultra-flow.. It is a 2 1/2" or 3" straight through muffler & is quiet as hell.. They listed it as flowing 1200 cfm of air in the 2 1/2".. Search for the video links that I posted for my SVO @ Autobahn.. My car is so quiet that you can barly hear it on the videos.. I have 3" d/p, no cat to a single 2 1/2" ultra-flow & tail pipe.. Very nice & quiet.. Even outside the car.. No resinance inside either..

If you are wanting a super quiet exhaust start w/ the E6 and not a header, stock elbo, 3" dp, high flo cat, 3" y w/ dual 3" spintec mufflers #8444 and out the back. Here is an informal review on the sound deadner http://www.sounddeadenershowdown.com/ Would have better performance than stock and quieter too.......
