  • 3" stinger exhaust

I am putting stingers 3" dual exhaust system on my 86. I am adding in a 6" long braided flex pipe to help with motor movement. Anyone have any ideas as to where to cut this into the system? I was thinking of putting it in the down pipe but I am worried about it being too close to the turbo (heat issue). What the system is comprised of is : 3" downpipe,3" pipe eliminating the cat and a 3" Y pipe with 2 1/2 pipes into the mufflers and 2 1/2 tailpipes. any and all suggestions are welcome, thanx.

I have the stinger setup, i got a flex pipe welded just before the curb on the downpipe. Fits pretty good beside the tranny.

    Mesure twice, cut once

Also what kind of mufflers are you going with ??

dynamax turbos. I have flowmasters on now and I HATE them = the bumble bee drone at 2200 rpm (my cruising speed)

I usually use the flex pipe to replace the cat.

I have mine laying horizontal right where the cat would be too.

Has anyone had problems with the 3" tailpipes but me? I have tried multiple times to install this thing but not been able to without it jamming up against the bottom of the car and the upper arm. If I move it far enough back to where it won't contact anything, the tailpipe won't fit onto the forward portion past the fuel tank. I have even tried to crush portions of the pipe as it goes over the axle but it just doesn't seem to be bent properly to fit. I've been driving around with nothing after the muffler for months. It's really loud.

I finally broke down and bought a dynomax 2.5" tailpipe which will mate up with the otherwise 3" exhaust this weekend. I'll give up a little performance to quiet down the cabin a bit.

Mine fit without problem, just had enough clearance between the control arm, frame rail and the fuel tank.

You're not the only one - I am working on that very same process. It has to hang EXACTLY perfect or it will not fit. Part of my original problem was that I ordered the wrong muffler (for the Merkur) which has the center outlet. You need the one with the opposite offset inlet/outlet for the SVO, which I am finding fits much better, but is still a VERY tight fit. Shannon at Stinger has photos of how it should be exactly positioned. BTW - he is a GREAT guy to work with. I was impressed with the attitude he has about supporting his product after the sale.

I also found that I had to "tweak" the down pipe just a bit to make the lower end not hang/angle so far down. I had the muffler shop put in about a 3 degree slight upward bend in the middle of the downward angle section and now it hangs perfectly.

                          Here is my SVO downpipe:

I have had this setup since 2004 and it has worked great. The turbo actually got quieter.

Nice setup caroth. Mine is similar, except that the lower v band flange is down stream of the cat. I wanted to easily take off the downpipe to work on the starter/ clutch ect.

This may be my problem. I think my muffler has a center inlet and offset outlet. I'm not certain though, I'll have to go look later today. I can say that in order to get the muffler to fit I had to chop off about 8" from the mid-pipe. Otherwise the muffler would have been bumping against the rear axle. And the bend over the axle will either fit properly with no room for the tailpipe or it jams hard against the floor and control arm (as I move it forward to make room) and the tailpipe is snug against the front of the fuel tank.
