  • ? about Yokohamas

I am going to need tires soon so as to get the svo into its roll as daily driver. I had hoped to find some 94-96 cobras, but that has proven uneventfull. Anyways I can either buy 2 fronts and hope to find the cobras or buy 4 new tires for the stock rims. Because I live in the NW where its always rainning I need a tire that handle the wet and have a long life. Dad and I have our eyes on the Yokohama YK520 225/50/16 tire. Has anyone tried these?

The 520's will do well in the rain, as long as there is no snow. As far as handling goes, they do handle well for daily and some "spirited" driving. Not sure about road noise, but my customers that bought them have been happy with them. Pricing is right in line with the caliber of tire that it is, sure you could spend more, and you could spend less also, but a good tire for the money.

I have those on the daily driver and can't wait for the tread to die on them! I read up on 'em and noticed they could handle some snow which I thought was awesome for those situations I don't have the studded tires on (quick grocery run or what not). Don't go out in the snow with those tires on! Last year when we got that snow storm I was running a few errands (one of which was to have the studded tires swapped) and I've never been close to getting stuck so many times! You get virtually zero traction with these tires in the snow. Once they are gone its back to the trusted michelin's for me.

No, to only set I had to warranty was the older tread design(YK420). That customer drove a hopped up SHO set up for autocross and some road racing, he just didn't like the handling. I'm sure there could have been some that may have been defective, but not every tire will be perfect.

If your interested in Cobra knockoffs, try www.americanmuscle.com They have them for $99.00 each and free shipping. All they sell is Mustang stuff, they also have the new Shelby rims. I've bought from them before with no problems..

I had those Yokohama's on my 1984 Mustang back in 1987. I liked them alot. Great looks and traction. Only problem is that they were pretty worn after ~ 25k miles. But who buys performance tires for the longevity anyway?

Thanks guys, I actually went out and bought 2 federals from les swab and had them put on the front, but between the charging system and the snow lately the svo has been tucked in the garage. So after I get a few more bugs worked out I will swaping the federals to the back and we'll see how they grip and I will report back.....
