  • Wheel Locks

So i just picked up my SVO and it has a frozen caliper. So i look in the gove box to get the wheel lock key thing out and find out that it is rusted and that they separate into two pieces. What can i do to get the locking lug off, or where can i get a new key for it. I also have a 93 GT that i craked the key on so any information would help.

Unfortunately, it never lasts long around Pat's place!

Too bad you're not on the West Coast, as we have a set of master keys from Ford. One of them would probably fit. You can also order replacement keys from McGard, the original supplier of the locks and lug nuts for the SVO to Ford.

        Use an old socket

Find a socket that will fit on the locking nut very snug, drive it on tightly with a hammer and then break it loose with a ratchet. It usually doesn't take a lot to break it loose and then it should spin right off. Then put the socket in a vise and use a punch to get the lug nut out and go on to the next one.

I went through a similar predicament.

When I first got the car, I took it to Sam's to get the new tires mounted. I had forgotten about the locking lugs until the guy came out and asked for the key........take a guess, no key anywhere in that car.

One of the 6 places I went was the Ford dealer (cuz they were 4 blocks away). They told me that they had locking lug tool sets, and once they found they match to my pattern, they could order me one from the part number on the key. They send out a guy with about 6 plastic tool kits.....with keys missing here and there. W-e-e-e-ll, one of the 8 or so missing was the one I needed.

Next was a Goodyear dealer that told me a 3 hour wait, and $20 a lug. AND, they couldn't garrantee that they would not break a stud off.

I ended up at the little hole-in-the-wall that inspects my cars, and he had the tool to get them off, without damage to the lug or stud........$5 a lug.
