  • No Mufflers

Anyone run a cat and no mufflers? I am going to put my stock(86) duals pipes back on the car and I don't want to spend the money for mufflers until I can buy a decent cat back 2.5". Is this going to be loud?

I did on my previous 86 SVO. It was not loud at all. I bought it that way. It was no louder than my current 86 with a 3" through pitbull mufflers. I say "You can do it!"

I went to the "exhaust shop " today and I told them I would cut the old exhaust off after the convertor, and supply the Y-pipe and the tailpipes. They had to put the y-pipe and the tailpipes on and connect them. He quotes me $100 !!!! Ouch! I'll be looking for another avenue.

Yeah, that's about right. I had a shop swap my stock mufflers for a pair of Borlas I bought and I think the charge for it was around $90-100. Usually you can get it cheaper if you just hacksaw off the old exhaust, then install the new stuff with clamps, drive down to the muffler shop and just have them weld the seams. I did this when I installed a cat-back on my Cherokee. I think the guy at the shop charged me $20 (cash) for the welding.

              Muff dB's

fwiw, on my 84, I'm running a ported E6, stock DP, stock cat with about 2" of pipe after the cat with a turn down. No muffler at all. Drive the car everyday and no issues, drive by police and not even a glance.
