  • Estimate from Midas on exhaust work.

1986 SVO Current-3" dp into 2.5 macs, 2.5 tails, about 8 years old.

Car was up on the lift and needs a driver's side muffler and tail. Of course the guy gave me an esimate replcaing driver and passenger's side mufflers and tails. He has Flowmater 40 series, tails made of aluminum and what he calls chrome tips which are about a foot long. I currently have the stainless steel chrome tails in it which I like.

    Here is his estimate:

    2 Flowmasters = 189.90
    Two tails 160.00
    2 chrome tips 53.90

    Parts total 403.78
    Labor 213.90
    Total with tax 681.21.

First thing is I do not even know if I want to go with the Flowmasters which I know I can find less expensive online. I love the sound of the Mac Mufflers.

    Questions:

    1. Could I just replace the driver's side muffler and tail and leave the passenger side for now?

    2. How can I tell which Mac Muffler would be the same or updated to the one I have on it now? I could not see any part numbers on the mufflers themselves.

    3. Keeping in mind money is the issue right now, would anyone replace one side and not the other?

    4. Which muffler and why?

    5. Where can I find the 3" elbow off of the turbo and does it make a decent difference for the cost of it. The car already runs great.

    Thanks.

    2. you probalby don't need a part number.. just measure the muffler length, width, height... pipe size, offset, straight... then go to MAC's website and match up the figures. Looks like new MAC mufflers are like 60 bucks each. for the price just get two of them. If one of the mufflers is going out and they are both the same age them possibly the other one is on it's way. Replacing both you do it at the same time, only one time.

    $.02

      1. Yes
      2. read below
      3. No
      4. It's all up to your tastes, desire, and bank account. There are quite a few threads in the EXHAUST section to mull over. Read up what others have posted to help you out.
      5. ATP turbo makes a nice piece, but pricey. Stinger has stuff. Motion Dynamics just came out with a new 3" downpipe as well. SEARCH here for answers using the SEARCH feature.

        estimate

hey. not too long ago i had a opportunity to look in a WALKER cataloge and found a whole 86 svo system. if you can find a walker dealer check them out. if they are discontinued you might contact the company and see what a complete system or the individual pieces that you need would cost. cuts the hell out of labor costs if you can do yourself.

I spent $1000 or was it $1100 on a full 3" stainless turbo back with a stainless Dynomax muffler...passenger side only, 14 pieces of tubing all butt welded with perfect welds.

Seems like muffler choice will be the hardest.

            Thanks guys for responding.

It seems to me deciding on which mufflers to go with is going to be the hardest decision.

How the heck do you make a decision when there is so many to choose from?

Which is the least expensive muffler with a good sound?

IMHO, you should just buy a catback system for a V8 car and have it welded onto the factory Y pipe. You could get an all stainless catback for close to what they quoted you for mild steel mufflers and tailpipes. You could probably save the difference in price in the parts in the labor if you haggled with them a little.

Or, you could just go 3" all the way back and only run one tailpipe. That's the course of action I'm going to take one of these days.
