  • is it worth it?

So the kitty on my car was crap so I had it cut off and the guy made an S bend right there in place of it. I have another year for emissions so I want to get a cat put on it so it's legal and all.

Here's what i have found from searching and browsing..

    1. Catco makes a complete down pipe with cat but it is the stock diameter. It retailes for about $120 shipped. I would only have to get it welded on at the muffler.

    2. I could get the stinger 3" down pipe and get a slip on Catco converter for $150 or so but then have to get a 3" muffler and adapter for the over the axle part.

    3. Motion has a 3" dp as you all know, but I can't afford it.

Keeping in mind I want to get mileage, not power..but I understand a properly tuned motor will net the best mileage.

Someone once replied saying that with the 3" if all I want is mileage it would do me no good.

Do you think it would benefit me more just to get the OEM diameter with cat instead of going 3" for mileage purposes?

    TIA
    B.

if your not wanting POWER. leave the DP alone and get a CHEAP ebay cat. hell if the tune is good enough you could pass emissions without it. I lmost did.

cool... I was looking at the catco pipe just cause it was bolt in, but it's probably cheaper just getting a cat alone.

        cool!

ok I did the math and read lots of posts about mufflers on here.. price wise I'm going to get the catco pipe w/cat and then replace my muffler with a Dynomax one matching the in/out sizes. Right now I have some generic oem muffler. That should flow good and stay legal.

I added up the cost of doing 3" and it would be well over 200 not including cutting and welding so I'll stay with the OEM pipe size and just get a good muffler and cat.

          thanks all

I found a hek of a deal..for those that want to replace the OEM pipes and cat.

The catco down pipe with cat I've been talking about is 2" inlet and 2.25" outlet.
I found another bolt on down pipe with cat that is made by Eastern Catalytic and it is 2.5" inlet and 2.5" outlet. both of these pipes are witih in 10 bucks of each other and one will flow better.

So, what I'm going to do for the same price as teh Catco and muffler I'm going to get the EC one that is larger and get a dynomax muffler the same in/out diameter. The mufflers I found at Steeda for half the price of summit or jegs as well.

Just FYI. I'll order this soon and get some pics up.

pics of the catco 84 down pipe with cat

I know this is an old thread but Im in the market for a decent stock type exhaust system. Hey BrianO, did you end up buying the EC down pipe with cat or the catco? Please let me know how it turned out. Did you like it? how did it sound? Did you ever get around to getting pics of the parts installed? Any info I can get on these would be greatly appreciated. Mine is a 84 slapper bar stock engine and I just want a clean, stock type exhaust for this soon to be daily driver, thanks

Ive searched through here and cannot find any pics of these parts installed.

didn't even notice this until now, sorry for the late reply. At that time I did purchase the Catco part and it wasn't too bad at all for a stock replacement. I've since sold that pipe to another member and gone 3", but if you want the stock setup that catco is an easy and inexpensive replacement. The fit was good, but if I remember the pipe was actually a bit smaller than stock..I could be wrong. I think in the review section there's another post about it with pictures. good luck!

Just a warning about the 3" tailpipes. It's freaking hard to get them to fit without hitting the frame, the gastank, or something. I'm still tweaking mine. I'm going to have to add some dimples in mine a couple places to fix it for good.
If it ain't broke... Give me some time!

I got mine to clear everything, but it took some tweaking..no dimples though. I suggest making a cut on the loop that goes over the axle so you can twist adn turn the tip because if you line up the tip the axle part doesn't line up, and vice versa. I also took some out of the part that goes into the muffler. I'm happy with the final fit, look, and feel.
