  • stripper for bumpers

I talked to my painter today...

he has my front bumper, and side spats ready to shoot, (they looked very good too!) but he was having trouble with my back bumper.....

he says best thing would be to strip it...

he dosn't mess with a lot of plastic stuff, and was afraid to put his regular stripper on it. (he does a lot of OLD stuff) he had a 49 coupe he had just finished that was red that was NICE!!

Anyway, got any idea on what kind of stripper I should use on this??

here is a pic of the rear bumper...

There is a specific stripper made for urethane bumper covers, I believe one is made by Marhyde. I have a can over at the shop and will post the info on it later today...The urethane specific strippers will take off the paint without harming the cover itself...

      OK, here ya go.....

      Mar-hyde
      Tal-strip IV
      "Urethane parts paint remover"
      No. 5611

and it comes in a 17oz. aerosol can.....

Your better body shop supply type auto parts stores should carry it, Mar-hyde is a pretty popular brand. You might even find it at some of the chain stores like Pep Boys or Autozone(I haven't looked there though)....

Eric, When I had my SVO repainted my shop sent my nose, spats and sail panels out to a shop that specialized in restoring plastic parts. He said they blasted it with walnut shells, if my memory serves me right. I saw the parts in their raw blasted form and they looked brand new.

You might want to ask your shop if they know of a place that does something similar. I don't like the idea of chemicals and plastic for some reason. If you would like, I could send you my body shop guy's info/number so you could find out more about what he does. Let me know.

That sounds like a really good idea...

Do you know where they sent them, and about how much that was?

Like I said, My painter does a lot of OLD restorations... the stuff he usually paints only has metal in it!!

Eric, I don't know where he sent them too, but I do know it was local. I am sure there are shops around you that also do it. Since my body shop guy has been in the business for a while he may even have a lead for ya. Here is his info:

            Larry Glidewell
            Court Street Ford Collision
            Bourbonnais, IL
            815-939-6422

The number above is the general shop number, so I am not posting any personal info. Just ask for Larry and let him know I gave you the info/number. He can explain what method the shop used to strip the plastic. He will talk your ear off if you give him the chance too. Good luck.

I used the Mar-hyde plastic stripper and it worked and was messy. The media blasting sounds like the way to go.

              Good luck
