  • Tranny Grinds into 3rd Gear Intermittantly...

    Hey guys,

Every once in a while my '85 grinds going in to third gear. I've tried to come up with little tricks to stop this from happening but nothing seems to work. I make sure the clutch is all the way to the floor, let the revs drop, shift fast, shift slow, etc. but nothing ever works every time. Any ideas what this could be?

If it is the gear, is there any place I can buy just the one gear?

Thanks a lot guys, its very embarrassing having everyone look at you when you grind into third!

On that note, I've seen it written several times that synthetic ATF is better for the bearings, standard ATF better for the fiber synchros.

I've always run Redline, but that seems logical to me.

Oil in the tranny was replaced less than 500 miles ago. Guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and get a transmission shop involved.

        It's the stock WCT5 off my '85, so I believe 3rd gear is a 1.36.

        Thanks for the help guys!

i thought you were supposed to run only ATF in the t-5 gearboxs because it has brass synchros? im doing away with synchros entirely this winter. gonna try a G-force dog cut gear set.
