I know I'll need a new crush collar, and nut, and to set the pinion when I install it.
The clutchs are exactly what I was wondering about.... I have 2 posi carriers.. maybe a check through the 2, and pull the best set of spider gears, and the best clutches ?
Looks can be deceiving. Magnaflux or zyglow add to cost of checking used parts. Better to buy uninspected parts off somebody's grandmother's car than Mike Fleming or myself.
Stack height comes into play, and shims can me made from readily available materials. .020 can make all the difference in the world. Guess how thick a beer can is!
Even after it is all set up there is a good chance you may have a whine. The gears are just not going to be contacting in the same location and it is going to sing to you. I put some used 3.73 gears in a 8.8 from a Mark VII replacing the 3.26s. I've gotten use to the hum now but I am going to replace them, it's on my list of things to do someday.
yep, My Dad has setup many a set. He said if they are a matched set (been run to gether before) you usually don't have a problem, but you are always going to have that chance with used gears.
I poped my spare rear apart today, pulled the trac-loc out.
at some point, it's had some water or moisture in the fluid.
The axles had quite a bit of rust on them, and there is rust in the tubes.
the rust seems to wipe out of the tubes pretty easy, and I can wire brush the axles.
What's the best thing to clean the tubes and carrier out with ? I'll have to clean the crap out of it to get it good and clean before I put the new bearings and stuff in it.

Use a pipe cleaner from a Plumbing supply place, or duct tape a toilet brush to a broom handle and scrub-a-dub-dub away!
If there are any engine rebuilders in your area, you may want to see how much they want to stick the housing in their caustic soda bath. Let their "Mr Bubble" do all the work.
