  • Parking brake

On the SVO I just bought. When I went to use the parking brake for the first time. (Probly in years) It bound on the Drivers side and locked. So I wandered back their and fixed that but undoing it on that side. SO then for a week now I have had only the pass side parking brake working. WEll last night that one bound up. Is this a common problem...or is it just that my car was in storage soo long. Should I take the cable off and lube the whole thing. OR should I just take the calipers apart and rebuild them and not waste my time?

First of all, make sure you know where the problem exists. Disconnect the parking brake cables from the rear caliper and make sure the cable itself is not binding....at that time you will know if it is the caliper or the cable. If it is the caliper, replace them.....if it is the cable, see if you can lube them up using WD-40 and working them back and forth...if they are seized tight then find another set. This is most likely due to the car being in storage...

      CABLES

Are the parking brake cables an SVO only part from Ford or could I get them at the local parts store ? Does anyone have part numbers ? Thanks

parking brake cables are pretty famous for doing this. But sitting can certainly cause calipers to stick also.

If you are driving the car, with the cable disconnected on one side, I'd say your problem is the cable (unless your brake is dragging, and you just haven't noticed..)

I'm not sure if the cables are a SVO specific part... I'm sure someone can answer that tho..

The cables are SVO specific and are no longer available from Ford....however, I have heard that a replacement is available through auto parts suppliers but I have not investigated it myself. Check with your local auto parts store(NAPA, Autozone, etc) and see. You can also remove your original cables and try soaking them down with WD-40 or similar and see if they free up....I have gotten a few cables to free up this way.
