  • 84 vs. 86 radio

Can I easily put an 86 radio in my 84? Specificaly I am talking about the wiring harnesses?

    Thanks!
Hoping to get on the track soon

    IMO...

Why not put an aftermarket radio in? I know the 84's are the old-style rotary shafts, but honestly, the '86 radio is not that great. And the amp in the dash is a joke. I had to replace a drive belt on the tape player in my 86 radio.
I pulled the radio, amp, & wires. Plugged a new Sony in to the power-harness, and ran new speaker wire. It was fantastic... until it got stolen.

Because I'm a cheap bastard and already have an 86 radio lying around.

Almost forgot, plus I wouldn't have to worry about someone stealing it!

You have to cut the dash to make this change ---

I would try to find a aftermarket radio that uses the posts.. you can still find them.

That 86 radio would bring almost enough to pay for the new aftermarket radio... they are getting harder to find that still work.

You might check out the Jensen CR-225x I have seen them in the 60.00 range, even less at a few places, just search Google. Crutchfield has a Kenwood KRC-2007 but it is 99.00 and doesn't seem to be any better than the Jensen.

Neither of these are real good units, and I wish that I had other options besides cutting the dash. I know there is Custom Auto Sound but thier price are way too expensive for me, for what they are selling anyway.

I have the Kenwood model in mine and also installed a CD-Changer under the passenger seat. I used an RF Interface for the changer. I don't have any complaints with this set-up, it works fairly well, but it won't win you any Autosound contests.
              Got everything from Crutchfield.

Here's a pic of where I installed the CD Changer controller:

BTW - the peice holding the Controller came with the changer, I just had to round the corners in order to fit into the ashtray opening.
