  • Shifter gone wild

Ok....so my son has been driving the SVO to school. Today, he tells me that the shifter is broken. As he went into 2nd gear it broke. I drop by and sure enough the shifter can "lay" back to almost horizontal position and only the dash prevents it from going forward that much. Since I'm at work and can't crawl around in my work clothes, I wasn't able to check under the car...but my first guess is that the linkage is broken or disconnected.

Won't be able to take a look at it till after work, and we will have to pull it home in this condition. Anyone have a guess to start looking at it? He was hoping to get a stereo put in it this weekend, for the upcoming and hugely important at that age, home coming dance. I did take the center console off, but didn't have a wrench to take the shifter boot off.

    Any ideas?

There are two bolts that hold the shifter handle to the base, I'll bet one is broke.

Really...man that would a sweet and simple fix...hope you are right.

I'll try to grab him over lunch, grab some wrenches and see what's up.

and quite common with the stock shifters. I busted my hand once with a powershift to 3rd - straight into the radio. The stock shifter also has a weird 'sleeve' for the bolts. I dont remember off-hand the exact size-etc ... but the easiest process would be to bite the bullet and get yourself an aftermarket shifter assembly.

Yeah...I was thinking about the same thing (new shifter). The knob is in pretty bad shape too, so maybe the SVO gods are telling us something?

Just took it apart...sure enough, the lower bolt was broken.

              You guys are good. Thanks.

Nah, she is the VPILF (pronounced "pilf"). Likely a potochop, but probably not too far off her younger years when she was on the beauty show stages.
