  • doing clutch this weekend

Well, when I did the new tranny a friend gave me a new clutch kit for the 2.3 for free so I couldn't pass it up. After driving it all this time it is slipping above 2800rpm's so I'm replacing it with an OEM replacement. The replacement is called Fenco.. anyone have experience with it? nothing came up related with a search.

I was going to do the spec 1 or 2, but for the price I got the Fenco kit and a complete new set of motorcraft brake pads so not all bad. I don't need anything major anyways, just a clutch that will grab and hold it.

It has a new flywheel in it already so this should be a snap..although 4-5 hours isn't really a snap.

Sorry, I've not heard of fenco...

and I watched the Hubers do a clutch in Baslers SVO in about 45 mins...
would have been quicker, but we had a stuck bolt that took the blue wrench to get loose.

it won't be 45 minutes that's for sure. one person, a jack, and some jackstands.. it will take a few hours probably. I could invite people over for a beer/clutch party..haha

I got the Fenco from PartsAmerica, it said high pressure, recommended OEM replacement.

Depending on the miles on it, and the amount of slippage that has occured, you may want to consider a resurfacing of the flywheel.

          Just my $.02

clutch and flywheel are fairly new..maybe a few months and since I was out of work not many miles. I'll check it out though. Once I found it was slipping at 2.8k-3k rpms I just don't rev that high and dont' really need to, but when needing to merge in traffic I need that extra torque.

that clutch kit was for the 2.3 and is a submodel made by Zoom, but it's probably one of the bottom of the line ones seeing as how the pressure plate is pretty weak.

well got the new clutch installed today. the throw out bearing was CRAP on the old one.. my gawd.. it just rattles around like a childs toy in my hand...the clutch plate had a burn mark on it as well and the flywheel is still in good condition. I cleaned the flywheel with brake cleaner as well as the new clutch plate.

took all day..drop exhaust, drive shaft, drain tranny fluid...THEN I relize that the new clutch pressure plate has a different pattern for the dowel pins..GREAT.. the other one I had had two sets of holes and so does the flywheel.

So, it's meaninless to try adn remove the dowel pins in the flywheel so I try adn find new ones... Autozone..no. O'reillys..No. A-line..No...Advance Auto..No.

had to go to two ford dealers to get 3 dowel pins. Each of them only had 2 and each of them are on opposite ends of town. The farthest one of course closed in 45 minutes while the close one stayed open until 5...

              ggeeeez!!!

I just got done pulling my trans to reseal it as it leaked from almost every casting parting line. Pulled the clutch while I was at it. 125K miles and it still had the original E5XX ford clutch in it, and it looked in fantastic shape. As well as the flywheel and pressure plate. I'd of figured it to be a replacement or very fragged original. I've honestly never pulled a clutch that was in such good of shape. I wonder is it was ever replaced by the dealer to have the Ford part numbers on it?

with the miles and year of the car I'd expect it to be a newer clutch, but it's very possible it's the original.

Done!... that free clutch kit that was given to me although with good intentions must have been the complete wrong clutch for this car even though I checked the part number and it was in fact for this motor.

the fenco one I just installed, purchased from PartsAmerica, works great. My clutch pedal doesn't have to be adjusted, the throw out bearing isn't rattling like crazy and it grabs. I can actually rev over 2800rpm's now without slipping the clutch. woohoo!
