I don't want this to just be about me, everyone needs to chip in their "road trip" stories.

Day. 1, Dad and I got up early and packed the car and our gear. Pulled out of Oregon City at 10:30am and hit I-84E. Headed north and stopped in Spokane to have a look at a sad 86 2A we heard about. got some food and kept goin. Stopped for the night in Massoula, MT. 587 miles today. Today's average speed, 71.49 mph, MPG = 24.27

Heading for Dickinson, ND tomorrow and hope to meet up with Boardmaster in Billings, MT.

I was wondering if you're were gonna have a co-pilot for that epic journey. Did you get the VIN on the 2A in Spokane?

boardmaster
10-07-2008, 08:28 AM
I can't remember if I got the vin from that one or not. Bob Tweedy gave me a heads up about this car a couple of months ago. IIRC, the owner will not part it out but he wants $1500 for it as is. I believe Fastest4d has the vin and some pictures that Fastmonkeywheels took and sent him.

Day 2: Missoulla, MT to Dickinson, ND. Good trouble free day, car ran like a champ!! Stopped in Deer Lodge to visit the Montana Motor Museum. Everything from 1916 Model T's to a '71 Hemi Cuda AAR. Some really cool cars.

Thought I would try an experiment so I added a bottle of 104 Octane boost to a tank of fuel. MPG dropped by 6mpg!!! I am now using the second bottle i bought as a bi-wing support:):)

todays stats. Mile travelled:678. Avg. Speed:77.02mph Avg. MPG:25.96, best MPG 28.74

I got a late start today, I'm currently at a $42.50 (with tax) a night hotel about 60 miles from Memphis. First tank of gas was almost 18 mpg, but I was adjusting the wastegate. Second tank came in at nearly 22 mpg, but more than once I glanced down and noticed I was doing 85.

I think I got enough of a head start that I can beat Pat & Mith. :)

Chalky,
The race is on. Pat & I will be leaving in about 1 hour & 15 min. Since you are half way there you should beat us by a long shot, unless you drive like a little girl...

Quit making stops for Fosters & you'll make better time.

Meotchh

We are officially dissapointed. We have arrived in Louisville & Chalky is still about 800 miles away.

Quit stopping for Foster's & octane booster & get moving!

Now if only our ride would hurry up & get here....

Just a heads up for all driving on I-75 and I-65 in Kentucky.

I just heard on the radio today that the law enforcement officials are cracking down on "reckless driving" on I-65 and I-75 in KY. Specifically, they are looking for drivers who don't know how to drive around semis, speeding, etc.

Well the truck and the trailer are loaded. I was to meet up with James in Memphis and I took off this morning but had to turn back. My oldest son had a medical problem. I have missed Pat, Mitch and James in Louisville too. I am taking off early in the morning for Richmond! See you all there tomorrow night....

Sorry ... that may be my fault. I was chatting it up with some KY Troopers, telling them about these two knuckleheads I know who drive F250s at 100mph while blasting the stereo with Drive By Trucker tunes and flash other motorists with an obscene message board. I could have sworn they werent payin attention to my story ... but I guess they were.

Here is a link:
http://fox41.com/Global/story.asp?S=9147360

Look at how creative they have to get to catch F250s:

"Kentucky State Police Officer Jamie Medley has traded in his cruiser for an 18-wheeler for the day: "We've encountered some really interesting stuff doing it like this," he says.

Officer Medley clocks the speeders with a radar mounted inside the semi, then radios one of several unmarked cars to make the stop on Interstate 65."

today it's the negative battery cable broke...

It is in, and ready to fire up tho!!!!

called Dave and Bruce while they were heading down from Wisconsin..said they'd be near Indy around 1:00am ish.... Dave called me when he was on the west side heading south and I met up with them at the truck stop while they were refueling.... had a good chat and said our good byes... I'll be heading down in the mid afternoon on Friday.
See you all then...

perfect excuse to get the SVO out for a romp on the not-busy-at-all interstate @ 55 degrees....the intercooler LOVES that cold air... it was my shake down run before my 3 hour trip south later today...

Doug, guess I got REAL lucky!!!!

Day 2: Corinth, MS to Texarkana, TX; 432 miles.

Well, we didn't make a lot of mileage today but we did have a great day. Stopped by and paid a visit to Bill Hatfield for about six hours. got to see his t-top SVO and take a bunch of pics for my t-top resto. Also got to see the "Patriot" in the flesh wich was very cool.

had a great time visiting with Bill and his wife nd then hit the road for Texas. Stopped in Hope, AK for fod and some young kid is like, "whadya'll roll up in, A Benz??" he then had three very rabid SVO fanatics giving him the rundown on the car.

BTW, forgot to mention we stopped at the National Corvette Museum yesterday. Very cool.

On the road to tucson tomorrow.

eft texarkana, TX early tis morning with the plan of crossing Texas. Well, we did it. There is a lof of not much. It reminded me of the centre of Australia, flat and treeless. We stopped in Midand, TX to see Fifi, the only airworthy B-29 Superfortress in the world, only to find they closed at 5pm. We arrive at 4:58pm:):):)

Regardless, on we trecked till we arrived in Las Cruces tonight. Arizona tomorrow.

what day is it????? Flagstaff, AZ to Nephi, UT via the Grand Canyon and Utah highway 12. 619 miles.

got a reasonably early start today and headed up hwy 89 to the grand canyon. Stopped at the Navajo Bridge, missed the south rim and so we headed for the north rim.

AWESOME!!!! If you've never been, go!!! it is truly spectacular!! Also sourced Mike a new avatar pic involving a cute German tourist and a thong. More to come. we th en headed north and gased up in Kanab before hitting Hwy 12. for the race through Bryce National Park.

Boardmaster departed at this point for a midnight run back to Canada and I proceeded to drive the hardest 120 miles of my life!!! 3000ft to 9000ft and back again on a road that makes the Cali 101 look straight. It was AWESOME!! dad and i were talking about EGT's and so we pulled over and the E6 was a glowing. The brakes got a good workout on the way down as well. Next time i want to do it during daylight hours but if you ever want to see what your car is made of, this is the place.

On the road home tomorrow.

FINALLY HOME

Well everyone, I've been driving all day and all night, and I am glad to say that I am home and my trip was AWESOME. I pulled off another 1000+ miles straight drive-trek in the SVO and the car ran great. I will do it again whenever and wherever my next trip takes me in it. MAN I LOVE THIS CAR.

Chalky and Ivan should make it home tonight. This was by far as ONE of the coolist things that I have done in my life. My total mileage for the trip was 9000 kms/5600 miles and say some very cool sights. Now to start planning NEXT YEAR'S trip with my 2 cars and bring some family along!!!!

I will get some pics up in the next few days, but first a shower and a nap.
I had a BLAST and will do it again and again and again. Jason

Day 6, Nephi, UT to Forest Grove, OR. 998 miles.

Home safe after a long day. Stopped by the Bonneville Salt Flats on our way through UT, to NV, to Idaho then on to Oregon.

Car ran great apart from a little stumble about 30 east of Wendover, UT. Determined it was a bad fuel problem. Can of seafoam fixed that problem and it was clean sailing all the way home.

Pics and stats to come. Day of rest.

The wheels are 16x7 and I have NO IDEA what they are from. I do know that they will bolt up on an SVO, but they will stick out some. I think they would fit better with an SN95 set-up or look good with the Motorsports fender flares and stock suspension. I have had these for about 14 years and bought them from a buddy that had them on a ford ranger (year unknown). Jason

Hi All,
well after a week back at the coal face the laundry is gettin done, Dad got safely back to NY and I've finally had a chance to sit down and go through the captains log. Here are the results.....

Mile travelled: 6782
Interstates travelled: I-205,84,82,90,94,39,74,65,75,40,30,20,10,17,15,80
Fuel stops: 22
Fuel used: 261.77 Gallons for a total fuel bill of $873.05
Highest price: $3.959. Kent, TX
Lowest Price: $3.039. Sweetwater, TX
Best MPG: 30.15. Mudds Park, AZ to Kanab, UT
Worst MPG:21.97. Blame it on the Octane Booster. Mr Hadden, enjoy!!!!
Average speed: only kept records the first half but it was consistently in the high 70's
Number of times we stopped to work on the Canuck's car: 2 :):):)
My Car: 1
States visited:Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nevada, New mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, Tennessee, Texaas, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin.

Well, there ya have proof perfect that an SVO can do the cross country run and make it home in one piece. The only drama with my car was a little miss just outside of Wendover, UT that was fixed with a can of Seafoam. Damn bad fuel. Thanks god my auxillary shaft blew two weeks before:):)

Highlights, THE REUNION:doh: , visiting with Bill Hatfield and Mike Fleming, seeing the country, the Pima Air and Space museum, the Corvette Museum, the Grand Canyon, Bryce National Park ( but next time it needs to be daylight!!!), that 4E that was always on my tail, NOT getting a speeding ticket:):):), making it home in one piece........

But, most of all saying that I got to go on this awesome adventure with my Dad. That's what made it super special and the most fun. Thanks to everyone who was at the reunion for making him feel so welcome.

CYA next year:):):):)

P.S.- pics to come

So Texas had the highest *and* lowest price for petrol? What's up with that?

I had the same thought...........

SVOJames
10-26-2008, 10:42 PM
Not counting Alaska, Texas is big enough to be considered 3 or 4 "normal" states, so I can see the price difference.

Gas prices are still funky here. There is a small refinery that services the Tyler area (near me), and also the Dallas area, 80 miles away. Gas in Dallas is 8 to 10 cents less than Tyler.

Normally, gas prices are higher along the Interstate, but around 100 miles east or west of the Midland/Odessa area (lots of big refineries and oil wells), it's cheaper along the Interstate than in the "cities".

Throw in the facts that Texas exceeded California in Wind Generated Power in 2007, Sweetwater bills itself as the "wind power capital of the US", and there are a couple of off-grid wind systems that feed the oil producers around there, and I can certainly see the gas being the cheapest in Texas.
