Not sure where I should post this. If it's in the wrong place can you move it to the correct forum! Thanks!!
We are finishing up our 86 and were wondering about fluids for it. We planned on using D4 for the Transmission, is this the best?
As far as Brake fluid.. is there a preference for the SVO or something that seems to work the best?
Also, what is the best Differential fluid to use? I've been told no friction modifier. Is this true?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks Christina

well I'm not sure what D4 is-- I run mobil one synthetic in my trans.. it has worked well so far.

Brake fluid -- depends on what you intend to use the car for... if it is going to see track, Paul @ SVP has some good stuff, -- I can't remember the name right off, but the boiling point is something outrageous. If it is going to be a show car, or sit a lot, they make a synthetic brake fluid that is suposed to resist moisture really well.

differential -- Whoever told you no friction modifier was on crack !! You will definetly need it... I run mobil one synthetic with friction modifier.

Use ONLY ATF(Automatic Transmission Fluid) in your 5 speed...Can't stress this enough!!!! Dextron/Mercon for Fords is the correct stuff. You can use synthetic if you like but only ATF.

Brake Fluid....I prefer(and sell) Motul 600....585 degree boiling point. You can also use the Ford Motorcraft brake fluid which is an excellent choice as well....or any parts store fluid works to do the job. The key thing with brake fluid is changing it periodically....brake fluid naturally absorbs moisture so regular changes every 2 years will keep your system clean and in top working order. NEVER(In my opinion) use Silicon brake fluid...it is not compatible with ANYTHING and the system must have every trace of other fluid out of it completely in order to use it. Synthetics as opposed to Silicon are compatible with everything but silicon. But again, key thing here is regular changes at least every couple years unless you see a LOT of track duty...

Differential....ABSOLUTELY use Friction modifier!!! otherwise you can kiss the clutches in the traction lock goodbye You can get the Friction modifier at your local Ford dealer or I stock it if you need any

Well thanks!! It looks like May for the finishing touches on my 86 and I want to have all the right stuff for it. Paul, do you recommend I purchase some of your stuff? The reason I ask is I only want the good stuff for my baby and I am on the West coast so it would need to be shipped. I don't mind the shipping cost if it's going to help protect and perform better. BTW Paul, have you heard of D4 for Transmissions?
        Thank you both for responding!

I won't tell you that you have to buy from me...but I'll be happy to sell you the products you need. I personally prefer the Motul brake fluid and I only use Ford Friction modifier...the stuff really smells badly but it works. Whatever you do, do not store Friction modifier inside your house...even when new and sealed the smell permeates through the plastic!

I have never heard of "D4", is it some sort of additive?

Great.....i'll let you know when we are ready to get the stuff we need from you! As for the D4, it is D4 MTL by Red Line and Sacramento Mustang sells it. I was told to get it for our SVO's. But I don't like to do anything until I ask several people with Knowledge of the SVO before doing anything!
            Thanks Paul!

OK, I can speak from experience on that....I wasn't familiar with the term "D4" but I DID use Redline MTL in my trans when I first rebuilt it under a recommendation from someone....It worked OK with one exception....I found it tough to get into 5th gear on occasion....I think the fluid was slightly too thick compared to the ATF because I drained it and put in straight Dexron ATF and haven't had a problem since. I would definitely NOT use it in your SVO...stick with the standard ATF or even use synthetic ATF but do not use MTL of any sort .
