  • first to second quick shift makes noise....

Those of you who worked corners 1 & 2 at the Auto-X probably heard this grinding.

Even in a non-competitive environment, I can't make the shift from 1st to 2nd quickly. I've tried many times, made sure the clutch pedal was fully depressed, and that I wasn't on the throttle while shifting. If I wait about a second, the gearbox shifts just fine.

Stock shifter, with the rubber bushings removed. Stage 2 clutch/PP/TO bearing, less than 10K miles, and doesn't show much wear.

Would a new shifter possibly fix this, or is the 2nd gear sychro bad, and I need to order a spiffy new trans from Hanlon?

Any thing I should check to help diagnose this?

    TIA,

    James

My guess is your 2nd gear syncro is toast, just like mine is

A new shifter won't make a bit of difference on this part.

mine has mobil 1 synthetic ATF in it, and it gets better once it warms up.

Looks like mine has the same issue ... When I get on it and try to shift moderately quickly from 1st to 2nd it grinds but if I do normal shift it seems ok ..

Guess I'll try changing the fluid and go synthetic and see if that helps and post the results

If I go with Mobil-1 0/20 or 5/30 do you add any friction modifier to it or use it straight up ?

Also check to see if the the clutch cable(s) aren't stretched. My old 92 LX did the same thing for about a month or so and then wham, the cable let go when I went to take off from a light(I think I still have the frayed end in my tool box somewhere). Remember, the dogbones on these cars are notorious for going out.

I have the same thing too. When my svo was running....lol. The 1st to 2nd shift (if I was getting it) would grind but normal shifts no problem. oh and I have royal purple atf in it. I guess I will be looking at the cables when I start driving it again.

Yep, that's always the quick and easy step. Unfortunately...

                  Went to 5w/20 Mobil-1 ... same issue ... likely it's the syncro ...

All other gears work fine ...

Guess I have to baby it until I get some $$$ saved up ..

Their prices are unbelievably low for a rebuild.......I just spoke with Bob yesterday. Cool dude. I bought a Ram clutch kit from him about a year ago....now what parts pile is that under again?

Our 86 does that. Fresh gear oil didn't do anything. OTOH, it's been doing it for years, including several years of 2-driver, once-a-month autocross events, so while you are saving your money for a rebuild, the noise doesn't necessarily mean imminent failure.

...no, but it is a 'good' excuse to replace/upgrade I always say!

I changed the (gearbox/tranny) fluid to a synthetic, and it helped noticeably.

Not that I was street racing, but I got into a competitive environment with a Dodge Charger, and the shift into second was much quicker, but I had some some slight noise.

The shift wasn't perfect, and I'm still looking for excuses to call Hanlon, but changing to a synthetic made a noticeable difference

shift harder and eventually the gears will liberty cut themselves

Yeah I'm fixing this with a Dog Box. I'm thinking it will be louder though.
