  • IRS Pinion flange get RTV????

I popped the old flange off the IRS the other night because it was leaking some stinky diff fluid (hate that diff additive). When I removed the nut off the end of the pinion gear, there was RTV on it. Have any of you other IRS folks seen this? I assume it may have been leaking around the nut from between the splines and not from around the seal mating surface.

Rob, Gator, Eric, Bueller, anyone find RTV when you swapped your flange? Is it normal to RTV the front of a diff? I’ve never pulled a pinion flange off before. I have a new seal to drop in there in the near future.

    Thanks! Mikey

Here's some pics of the new flange. The old one can be seen on the IRS.

    Kie,

You know that will not work here in Colorado, you need to bring that up to Fort Collins and I will recycle it correctly.

I have never found RTV on a moving part before, maybe it was someone else's attempt to fix a leak.

Ha! Gator said to build a dolly to roll around the IRS durring install. Once I have my over-engineered dolly constructed, I'll tow it up to you behind my Bronco for proper recycling. I better gert a lot of $$$ for the metal, as I paid a small fortune to get it shipped from CA!

I rebuilt my 7.5 and had the same leaking issue...was told by several here to put red rtv to stop the leak.....and it worked!

RTV on the splines, in order to stop creepage (Is that a word? You know what I mean!) of fluid up to the flange nut is a generally accepted practice. Silicone on the sealing surface is not.
