OK, maybe someone else has run into this problem. Is the outer shifter boot supposed to between the shifter knob and the white nylon washer? I looks like it is supposed to be tucked around the washer. It just will not stay. Does this make sense?
On my '86, the boot is sandwiched between the plastic washer and black steel flat washer. The way I see it, the washer on top prevents the boot from winding up when the knob is screwed on.
Just to let you know, mine came with an aftermarket knob put on by the previous owner.

My 86 was taken off for the first time. Shifter knob followed by shifter boot, followed by white nylon washer followed by black metal washer. The top of the shifter boot was sandwiched inbetween the shifter knob and the white nylon washer. the metal washer helps support the nylon washer.
Maybe I will try it again with the metal washer. I tried to get the boot over the plastic washer but when I tighten the knob, it twists the boot around. I will try it again.
I couldn't get the knob off by just "twisting" it. I had to pull the console, raise the boot and use a wrench on the nut under the boot. I'm sure if you put in back on this way, you won't have any problems.
