  • Auto clutch cable adjustment question

I know to check the auto adjustment on the clutch you lift up on the clutch pedal and I think it's supposed to pop up just a little and you press it down to the floor and repeat that a few times to insure the clutch cable is auto adjusted .. At least my previous SVOs did that ...

On this one when I lift up on the pedal it does not seem to pop up and release and allow me to let it auto adjust ...

Is this a sign of a bad quadrant ?

Previous owner replaced both clutch cables 4K miles ago but it seems like the clutch does not disengage when shifting until about 1/2 way down and feels kinda spongy but maybe that it is normal.. not sure...

have you looked under the hood on the firewall to see if you have an aftermarket firewall adjuster?

Didn't think about that possibility ...

I check it at lunch ...

Is there a tell tale giveaway of what to spot ?

yes, there will be a 2 piece metallic thingie with threads of there is an adjuster there.

If not, it will be a rubber grommet there

google it for a Mustang and look on a site for one to get a visual

Against the firewall, it will usually be a shiny round knob, sometimes blue, with little teeth around the knob for gripping and turning.

When I would try and adjust my factory quadrant by the correct routine, it would NOT adjust, so I needed to reach under the dash and manually move the quadrant, until I heard clicks. Thus, a bad quadrant.

Ok found a pic on maximum motorsports website ...

Seems like unless I get it about a 1/3 from the floor and shift smoothly it's ok

If I shift it a little quicker from 1st to 2nd (not speed shifting mind you) and unless I make sure it's pretty close to the floor I'll get an occasional grind or bump into gear (almost like the clutch is not fully engaged ..)

Hope it's not a syncro or fork but I'm leaning toward clutch adjustment first ...

Has the plastic cap with black grommet underneath on the firewall, looks original to me ...

a shift fork will not bend, it will flat out break.....which you would know about right off.

Is the plastic cap on the firewall an adjustment of somekind ? Has some groves formed in it like you could grip and turn it but I don't want to do something stupid ...

                  Let me know ...

No, the adjustment should be made of aluminum or some alloy, other than plastic.

Did you get it done? I am very happy with my Ford Motorsports quadrant and firewall adjustor, shifts like butter.

No it seems to be ok with the stock quadrant for now.. my problem was my 2nd gear syncro which I got fixed ..

But I will likely switch over sometime soon ..
