On the '84 SVO as I go about replacing worn parts and fluids, etc I realized I don't know what fluid to use for the rear end, since it has the limited slip. Can someone clue me in and give some local preferences for where to purchase like Ford, autozone, Pep Boys please? And is synthetic available?
I shop at FORD ....I try to limit what I buy from the local chain store parts places. I've always asked for the regular gear oil - and don't forget the friction modifier.
And dont spill it or get it on ( even if they are old ) your clothes...all kidding aside, the stuff smells like ....( insert some sort of dehumanizing/inhumane type joke here. )

I have been using Valvoline synthetic 80/90W gear lube for a few years now without any problems. You should be able to find synthetic versions of gear lube at your local parts store.
Gator is spot on with the friction modifier, the odor is NASTY. No more than one bottle of the modifier though, since it reduces the friction of the fluid. Since your 84 probably has some miles on it start with 1/2 a bottle and see if you get any chatter during tight, slow turns. If not you are good, if so add the remaining 1/2 bottle.
Also don't forget that the T5 tranny uses ATF and not gear lube. You can use Mercon II or Dextron III approved ATF's. I was running some brand of synthetic for the past 5 years and just changed over to Mobil 1, since it was on sale. Good luck with your project.
For as often as the stuff gets changed, unless you race hard and blow up rearends, I have always used RedLine Synthetics. At close to $10 a bottle its not cheap, but its what I use in my rears and transmissions in ALL my vehicles. If not then go with Valvoline Synthetic for the rear. I also use Valvoline Synthetic 10w30 in the Mustangs and Durablend in the Bronco.
