Changed my clutch yesterday (finally !!!!) and I changed out the alum. bearing retainer for the steel one along with a B&M shifter. I also changed the rear main seal on the motor while I was in there and replaced the UPR quadrant with a Granatelli. Now for the problems, first I am getting MAJOR chatter letting the clutch out (is this normal with a Spec clutch ?) and second when I let it out from a start or put it under load (not boost) something is touching something else cus there is a VERY LOUD rattle and it's driving me crazy !!!! third, there is a mild vibration at highway speeds and I think it is because the driveshaft needs to be clocked (my friend took it out and didn't mark it) I am totally open to suggestions

And I went with the stage 1 for now as I don't have that much done in the way of mods to it.

mainshaft was measured before removing the Aluminum one and measured and checked it with the new one on = the same. I haven't been under the car since I put her down and I am wondering if my buddy bolted the rear mount up. the reason I say this when I drove it today I held onto the shifter and stepping on it and letting off the shifter had some movement. as for the slight vibration at highway speed (55-60) do you think it could be the driveshaft needs reclocking ?

on another note what would you suggest for the break in on the new clutch. (miles - driving style, none or how much boost can I use)

Rev to 5Krpm, dump clutch. If it doesn't go boom, you're good

The manufacturer recommends babying the clutch for 500 miles before tromping on it.

You can try re-clocking the driveshaft 180 degrees and see what happens. It won't line up with all 4 bolt holes in 90 degree incriments. If that doesn't help, it's time for U-joints or a new driveshaft. Check for pinion slop/leaky pinion seal while you're under there, too.

did you make sure to torque the flywheel bolts? I once had to take out a trans 3 times because the bolts kept working loose.

the flywheel bolts were all torqued and the clutch is broken in now and runs fine. The problem that I still have is when I engage the clutch to start off
there is a real loud rattling sound (sounds like a woodpecker rapping on a metal vent pipe) I can't find it and the damned thing is driving me crazy (short trip)
it sounds like its coming from the firewall area.

That was my first thought too Mike, I had it up on a lift and we went over the exhaust front to back and all clearances are good. when it happens you can feel it throughout the body. I have looked everywhere I can think of for signs of shiny metal from rubbing and felt around trying to find anywhere a piece is close to another and frankly this has me stumped and totally frustrated.

Thanx for the input Mike, I will check all the areas that you mentioned.
I just find it strange that it showed up only after the clutch install.

didnt you get the big yellow sheet of break-in and troubleshooting with your clutch?

break-in : no full throttle drops till 500 miles of day to day city driving. after that, have fun!

                          recheck your linkage's setup.

IIRC (tossed mine out after break-in is complete) chatter can be caused by :
oil/dirt on the flywheel or pressure plate
                          material on the clutch disk
improper resurfacing, or lack there of, on flywheel or pressure plate

the 'finally!' statement seems to imply that the previous clutch was beyond its recommended service lifetime. how bad was the flywheel/pressure plate? were they resurfaced? cleaned before final assembly with a solvent?

the noise I am refering to is not clutch chatter. The clutch works fine now (after a 500 mile breakin without boost !!!) flywheel was properly resurfaced
and installed clean.it is a rattle somewhere under the hood (at least it sounds like that is where it's coming from) I am going to try and take a video with the sound

oh.. my bad, thought you were (still) dealing with chatter. *ducks back out of thread*
