  • Turbo Heat Shield

    All

I wanted to remove the heat shield from the bottom of my stock IC but before I did so I wanted to add a turbo heat shield. I did a search on the forum and found a few topics on heat shields/blankets but nothing that interested me.
Then I did a search on yahoo for Garrett turbo heat shield and came up with the following link.

I don't know who makes the heat shield but this company and several others sell the same product. I posted a seller because I can't find the manufacturer. They run roughly $35 for unpolished and $70 for polished. I bought the unpolished one.

The shield comes with an L bracket that mounts to the turbo via the top bolt of the turbo elbow. Then the shield bolts to the bracket with two allen screws. It wasn't a direct bolt on though. The shield had to be notched out for the oil lines, I just used a cut off wheel. The total installation took me about 1/2 hour.

I haven't had a chance to drive the car but I doubt I would notice any real seat-of-the-pants difference anyway. It does look pretty trick though. So here is my take, for $35 plus shipping plus 1/2 hour of your time you can have a turbo heat shield. I wouldn't bother with the polished heat shield it's twice as much. If you really want a polished one buy the unpolished and spend about 20 minutes polishing it.

If I can figure out how to post pictures, I'll post some.

    Good luck,

I planned to but I can't get the picture size down to the 2K limit.

          Hi Eric,

Yes I checked the FAQ and downloaded the shareware to reduce the picture size, but they are still too big. I can't remeber the format the pictures are on my computer at home. I will check my camera and see if I can re-take the pictures with less resolution.

          Thanks,

          Kevin

would this work better/same/worse than a turbo blanket? I have one on mine, but not sure it's working as desgned.

First off - Ken thanks for posting the pictures for me.

I would think that the blanket would do a better job than the heat shield. The problem is, there seems to be some controversy as to whether the blanket can actually harm the turbo plus the blankets are at least twice as expensive.
I removed the heat shield from the bottom of the stock IC and was looking for an inexpensive sheat shield that bolted to the turbo to take it's place. For the price I think it's worth it plus it cleans up the looks of the turbo.

the heat shield would help more with the heat soak on the IC right? maybe the blanket too..it supposed to keep the heat in the housing, but the drawback is if you get water in there it can rust quickly.

That's the idea, to reduce heat soak by the IC. The problem is the IC still sits over top of the exhaust manifold so I think it's just a matter of time until it gets heat soaked.
