  • Removing Tranny Help !!

Trying to remove the tranny .. I have the tranny unbolted and removed the support cross member but the stupid exhaust hanger (that sits on top of the cross member) is preventing me from removing it ... the tranny bumps into it and I cannot get it high enough to get over it .. ahhhh !!!

    So close ...

I tried to remove the exhaust support but can't get it out ...

    Any help is appreciated !

    Thanks

    drop the cross-member,
remove the mount on the trans that connects to the cross-member,
    remove the hanger bracket,
    then pull the trans.

Ok I did remove the mount to the crossmember but I could put get the exhaust hanger to slip off the exhaust pegs, super tight and not any room to play with to wiggle it out ..

Guess I need to brute force it and try again

      Thanks !

Pull the 2 nuts at the turbo exhaust elbo to get more play in the exhaust pipe.

          Lubricant is your friend....
use it on the rubber, and metal parts of the hanger.

I generally drop the down-pipe on a tranny removal anyway tho.

The rubber in that exhaust hanger is soft, you should use a soapy water solution for best result.

I've always yanked the exhaust... Less crap for my big a$$ to deal with under there.

You used an alignment tool for the splines, didn't you?

It should have come with the clutch. The parts store should have it in stock. You want the 10 spline version for a Borg Warner T-5. SVO James has one that I sent him. It has the part number on the shrink wrap card. Shipping costs more than just buying the tool.

I'm only replacing the gear box, the clutch was already rebuilt before I bought the car ..

Do I still need the alignment tool to get the gearbox to slide into the bellhousing ?

                          Forgive my ignorance ...

                          Thanks guys ..

i did not touch the clutch pedal, only slid out the tranny but for the life of me I cannot get the new one to go in .... I twisted and turned it from side to side etc and it just seems to slide in about 1/2 inch and that's it it will not slide in ..

It's from an 87 t-bird ending in 155 on the tag and I measured it and it seems to be exactly the same as the original

from a t-bird, it should be the same shaft.

you've just not hit the right angle yet. how I do it...
put a jack under the bell-housing,
slide directly under the t5, where one arm is in the middle, and the other on the tail-housing
start wiggling, and changing angles until I get it right, ocasionally changing the height of the jack under the bel-housing.
usually, when I hit the right angle, the dang thing will basically fall together.

If you pulled the t5 off the bell-housing, and left the bel-housing attached to the block, good-luck. I've taken 2 apart there, and like to have never gotten them back together. I can usually pop a T5 with bel-housing right in, in minutes. (loads of practice)
