    Missing bracket

Yes you are missing a bracket, that looks like an angle iron of sorts. I was going to take a picture for you but the battery in my camera is dead (now it's charging). You should find the hole for the other side of the bracket right above the oil pan right under the oil cooler/oil filter past the centerline of the oil filter toward the rear of the car. I will post a pic unless someone else beats me to it. If you know you don't have the bracket, post in the parts wanted section someone might have one??

Looks like you have a rear main seal leak too...

What can break or go wrong by not having this bracket?

The 84's didnt have them. As the oringinal owner of a 84, mine never came with one.

                    StangSVO what year?

By the looks of the mark on his tranny in post 1,where the bolt hole is it appears that this bracket was there at some point. The year of his car was never listed(checked his profile '85 Comp prep, so he probably is missing the bracket). The 84's are a strange breed, lots of little differences cut in and out depending on when it was built. Do they have the mounting holes for the bracket even though the bracket was not present? I only have my 85 at home right now so can't peek at the 84's, I don't doubt you are correct.

I have 3 84 cars, 2 were built in October but the earlier one had '83 style brushed chrome seat belt buckles and triangular plastic trim on the pillar, also the lower bodyside protection listed as standard feature in original Ford brochures but not present on many cars, this is denoted by a separate tag on the radiator support behind the ID tag stamped gravelgard.

interesting. is that lower bodyside protection the black quasi tar like substance sprayed on the bottom 2" of the body? my original radiator is long gone.

++ on the brushed chrome and trim as well, but it has a tranny bracket. go figure.

sounds like the brackets are hit or miss with 84's, but are on later models. that may explain why I don't have them.

                            No Bracket

My 85 has the bracket, My 84's are not at home so I would trust Mike and Kendal that it was not there in '84. I was just noting that some of the very early 84's had some unique little known differences. Sometimes it is assumed that 84-86 are the same except for the obvious well known differences.

The first time I saw one of those brackets was on the 87 TC drivetrain I put in the 'Trash car. Now I have to look under the 85 and the 86 to see if they're on there too.
